Spicy, peppery, and oh so comforting, braving a winter in Portland calls for lots of chai tea. Lucky for us, plenty of Portland coffee shops, tea purveyors, and cafes are crafting their own blends from a mix of savory and sweet spices ready to warm you from the inside out.
The perfect Portland breakfast/lunch cafe with pleasant, dog-friendly outdoor patio. Somehow Detour manages to avoid the crazy-making lines typical of other brunch spots in Portland.
To avoid the line at this a.m. hot spot, wake up a bit early! Huge portions, epic bloody marys, housemade chai, & lots of dietary restriction-friendly options without the wait (before 9 am).
This neighborhood tea shop boasts not one but TWELVE house chai varieties. Try the Alberta Street Chai, with Lapsang Souchong black tea, máte, vanilla bean, rooibos, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.
South African-style Indian food, with some awesome roti rolls, curry, and homemade chai. Like the best ice cream shops, you can sample from "mum's" flavorful daily offerings before you decide!
With plenty of gluten-free and vegan options, cheap eats and full sit-down meals served all day, Compote’s pretty much guaranteed to please everyone. Bonus: truly kid-friendly kid’s menu and play area.
This offshoot of SE Division’s Detour Café serves from-scratch pastries, sandwiches, soups, and focaccia pizza in a huge concrete-chic space that was once a Model T factory.
My favorite bagels in town! Great coffee, great service, though can be slow on weekends. Try the herby salty bagel with cream cheese, tomatoes, and onions. Amazing lox, too!
