You’re relatives fly into town from the land of sunshine, oranges and people who wear sandals year round, travelling around the sunny South as official Parrot-Heads singing along to Jimmy Buffet. They say: “Hey, we just started to watch the darndest show about Portland.....” You say: “Yes it really is filmed here and yes many of those skits are based upon quirky characteristics of Portlanders...” Here are some of my favorite, not necessarily wacky, places that have been showcased on Portlandia that will satisfy your out of town guests. Be prepared to smile when the cameras come out and they ask the staff “Can you take our picture, Carol is never going to believe I was here!”
Need a book, a quiet place to read, an escape from the rain or a gift? Stop in the Central library to find all 4.

Order a cup of joe, choose a tasty and sometimes offensively named doughnut or exchange wedding vows here! Even though this store is now bigger expect a line. The employees manage to keep the line moving but if it's really bad weather and you really want a Voodoo Doughnut head 10 minutes across the river to their 2nd location on NE Davis. Much bigger and you can dine-in.
Great music venue with shows nightly. Upstairs, great lounge area with fireplace and couches. Outside fire pit & patio, perfect place to chill
Seasonable, organic, sustainable, to-die for, all describe the food prepared at The Gilt Club. Sip on an expertly prepared classic cocktail like a Blood and Sand or the Brooklyn ( also known as the Manhattan) while you await your deliciously, to-die-for food.
Loved the papaya salad and even when the spice was toned down it packed a kick! Also loved the "broken crepe" with tenders muscles, green onions, egg and siracha sauce. Sipping vinegars can be added to any liquor, like vodka, for a touch of exotic flavoring. Our waiter could explain everything on this authentic, exotic Thai menu. Seating inside is loud but lively. The space heaters outside created ample warmth while dining in the closed off outdoor seating sections. Most times you will wait but turn in your name & head across the street to The Whisky Soda Lounge where they'll let you know when your table is available.
The sampler of drinking chocolates is a sweet way to add richness to any afternoon or evening out. 1 sampler is rich enough to share.
Brick walls, warm wood tones, flickering candles - fabulous atmosphere. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. A small mishap with our order and it was taken care of, apologized and we were treated to a dessert, which was amazing! Weather permitting, the original firetruck garage door opens the restaurant up to a large patio area.
Located within the Yoga Pearl studio. Prasad has a tasty menu of organic, sustainable dishes made with raw ingredients such as zucchini pasta, raw pumpkin seed pesto crackers, yam rice and a daily raw soup. Cooked staples include: quinoa, red rice, black beans, and cooked greens.
A friend and I twirled up fork full after fork full of zucchini pasta topped with pumpkin seed pesto, ricotta, avocado, tomato and carrots. Then we crunched down on a Feisty Tostado made of crushed pumpkin seed and pesto crackers topped with jalapeno cashew cheese, avocado, spinach, tomato, scallions and green chili sauce. The meal was nothing short of yum!
We warmed our chilled core with a wellness toddy made with ginger, lemon, honey and cayenne pepper infused water and Echinacea. And a
Harvest Cider - and invigorating mixture of apple, lemon and ginger juice steamed then topped with cayenne pepper and cinnamon.
