Seattle's a food town; it can also be an expensive town. If you want to eat well at home, but you're on a budget, here's where to go. Not all of these spots are bargain stores; some - like PCC - are actually known as pricey. But if you stick to their bulk sections (and only buy as much as you really need!), you can pick up some great products without blowing your budget.
Great selection of high quality spices. Often referenced by local chefs and cooking instructors as a great source. They also sometimes offer cooking demos w/their products.
Great source for organic produce. Also! More than a grocery store, PCC also offers cooking classes with some truly stellar local talent. Look for classes on topics like canning, cheesemaking and more. Also with local fave teachers like w/Iole Aguero, Becky Selengut & more. But sign up fast - classes fill quickly.
At the factory's little storefront, buy (cheap!) bags of delicious fortune cookies in variety of flavors (lemon, almond, vanilla...). Love the cookie more than the fortune? Buy big bag of "unfortunate" cookies - misshapen but tasty.
Tons of Asian ingredients, produce, seafood, & all at excellent (sometimes shockingly low) prices. Also huge selection of interesting faux meat products.
Bargain fruits & veggies. It's not all as pristine as the supermarket, but if you're on a budget, this spot will help keep you in fresh produce.
Total bargains on Asian and Latin ingredients, including produce and seafood. Also sometimes have some great and super-cheap serving ware.
Dazzlingly large selection of food, including decent selection of world food products. A little pricey, but some deals to be found in the bulk section.
Inexpensive produce, some organic selections, &, unexpectedly, some cool world food products like Polish pickled salad and Mexican sweets.
Pick up a bulk bag of their huffable dried chipotle chilis. Manteca, Mexican butcher, dulce, produce, and more.
OK, locavores & seasonal eaters might not find much at this spot...but if you're planning a party & need a giant bottle of grenadine or gross of paper plates, find your bargains here.
Looking for Mediterranean, Middle Eastern or British products? Need a special cheese, giant slab of Callebaut chocolate or bulk spices? PFI is a treasure for the adventurous home cook.
