There's no place like home because that's often where the best cooking can be found. These are my favorite Austin restaurants with menus inspired by home cooking.
Threadgills is fab because its simply celebrates what Austin is all about--comfort food and great music. The Sunday brunch will make you feel like you're at moms house again, and I love all the neon light decor and vintage signs. A must stop if you're in the South Congress area.
Shady Grove is your traditional American bungalow surrounded by trailer parks and live music. You must eat on the patio for great vibes and people watching. Also, they probably make one of the best vegetarian sandwiches around--the hippie chic sandwich!
Hoover's is the king of solid southern cooking! A frequent go-to for Chicken fried steak, okra and garlic cheddar grits!
I'm happy to say The Omelettry is everything we love about Waffle House in a friendly neighborhood diner environment. Real food, real people and cash only.
This downtown 24 hour diner has all the classics -- meatloaf, waffles, etc -- and I love how they use local ingredients when possible! If you're unsure about what to order, go with the chicken an waffles because the cinnamon sugar butter cannot be beat!
