Home to the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, Portland, Oregon is no stranger to stand up acts and improv performances. Portland has the traditional, dedicated comedy clubs such as Helium, Harvey's and Comedy Sportz, but also a number of bars and venues that host comedy nights and open mics. The following clubs throw these events, riffing on in-laws, airline food and fat mamas, at least one night a week.
While a premier venue for major bands touring through the area, Dante's also hosts cabaret acts, live band karaoke and comedy shows. Given the popularity of the venue and the booked acts, expect high volumes of people and long lines at the bar. If you stand in the audience looking thirsty with an empty drink, cocktail waitresses will come by to address your alcohol-related needs.
If you responsibly--but still regrettably--use all your quarters on laundry, wait until the second Thursday of each month when a five dollar cover allows free play of all (ALL!) the games. Mash those buttons to your inner-child's heart's content.
Bar of the Gods now hosts an open mic comedy night on Sundays. Show up at eight to watch and laugh as Xander Deveaux hosts local comedians deliver the five minutes of material that they've been practicing on their co-workers all week.
Tonic Lounge provides a stellar stage for local and national acts to perform. Go for the live sets and strong drinks. Most convenient: two bars in two different rooms. Pay in cash and pick whichever line is shortest.
If you're celiac or wheat-averse, try one of Mississippi Pizza's gluten-free pies with a crunchy crust. Wash it down with gluten-free beer, one always on tap.
Home to the Pacific Northwest's longest running comedy open mic night, the Boiler Room remains an apt title for a venue whose open mic runs like a well-oiled machine. Kevin-Michael Moore hosts 20 comedians for two hours of boundary-pushing comedy. Stay after the show to enjoy the smooth transition into a karaoke night.
While some comedy clubs have a drink minimum, Helium has a two-item minimum in an effort to promote the above-average food menu. Be sure to make these purchases in the showroom however. Food and drink purchased in the lounge area before, and even during the show, do not count toward this minimum.
