There's plenty of upscaleitude (is that a word?) in play within Philly's dining scene, and the Mexican genre is not resistant to the cries coming from the high end of the spectrum. Those spots are killer for a special night out, of course, but these no-frills Mexi joints are what really matter to real Philadelphians.
One of the best late-night options in the Italian Market. Campechanos dude!
Killer locally owned alternative to Chipotle and other build-a-burrito chains. The spicy beef and chorizo are both excellent meat options; get two of each as hard tacos, or both mixed in a burrito.
Always get the tripe, tongue and campechanos (mixed chorizo/beef) tacos here. Also huge fan of weekend-only specials — goat barbacoa badass!
Probably most famous around town for their al pastor, but the lengua, or tongue tacos, are a must-order.
Real-deal Pueblan cooking can be found outside South Philly — get your grub on all the way up in Kenzo yo.
Chuletas en roja (pork chops in red sauce) is my go-to order here. It's like food for four for the price of 1/2 a person.
Tacos (especially the recurring duck en nogado) are must-gets here, but don't sleep on the spicy chili cheese dog in the "vaquero" section. Amazing!
