DuPage County is just a Metra ride away, but you'll feel recharged after a weekend of touring museums, gardens, and wineries. Here's where to go.
A small but excellent art museum, there's a Mies van der Rohe house and art by local artists on view.
Unexpectedly cool museum that focuses on gemstones and lapidary art. There's also a great little gift shop.
A large, gorgeous park, Cantigny features gardens, museums, and Col. McCormick's mansion. It's a great spot to take a picnic and spend the afternoon.
Amazing Route 66 chicken shack that serves up the best fried chicken I've had in the state. Plus, the chicken wings are worth writing home about, and the sides like mac and cheese and special root beer round out the meal.
The Arboretum has trees from all over the world, a tree maze, and lots of beautiful spots for a quiet picnic.
Easily accessible from the Metra, Lynfred is a lovely spot to visit for an afternoon of wine tasting. They make a sparkling almond wine that's very festive, along with lots of great whites and reds.
Sergio's has tasty, family-style Italian dishes and a charismatic owner who works his way around the dining room. Be sure to try the blistered pizzas.
Very cool museum/house that focuses on artist and abolitionist Sheldon Peck. The house features a family tree, copies of his work, and interesting details about the role this part of Illinois played in the fight to abolish slavery.
Fun spot for a night of bowling. It's better for older groups, and there are tons of television and a bar.
D.O.C. has lots of wines and tasty bites to pair them with—try the Butcher's Plate, with cheeses, charcuterie, and creative bruschetta.
