There are a million interesting stores in New York, but a select few are visited over and over again by New York's voracious interior decorators and film scouts.
My jaw dropped ... and I was speechless, gazing at the rows and rows, and shelves and shelves, full of rentable vintage relics. This is a dream source for film and photography scouts, and during their occasional sales, for interior decorators and vintage fans. Check out everything from 50s kitchenware to church pews to mid-century modern cabinets to 60s TVs to 40s games.
This charming out-of-the-way store far down on Grand Street has a sparse yet somehow cozy feel and beautiful antiques, but my favorite treats are the dishes and trays, soaps and candles, and small wooden artifacts.
This cavernous store sprawls across a basement space crammed with vintage cardigans, strawberry brooches, Christmas wreath earrings, gnome statuettes, VHS tapes, Phil Collins records, errant chairs with wobbly legs and pretty vintage plates. You can find a dream date outfit here -- or nothing except for a plate with pretty flowers on it -- but it's always a worthy trip when combined with the Buffalo Exchange next door.
Excellent vintage shopping destination is a quick 20 minutes from Manhattan and walkable from the PATH. Beautiful selection of 40s and 50s hats, YSL shoes, sweet cashmere cardigans, and gorgeous 60s party dresses.
Odd Twin is absolutely impressive for costumes and vintage and the place where the two meet. From rows of 90s leopard print bodysuits to rows of crinolines to rows of beautiful vintage dresses, Odd Twin is a Park Slope gem for going to a fancy restaurant or going to a wacky costume party.
Film Biz is the Brooklyn spot for set items -- but whether you're having a themed party, scouting for a film or photo shoot, or simply browsing for curios, you're sure to find something interesting.
Repop has amazing mid-century furniture, but what you may not have realized at first glance is that they sometimes carry amazing hats and dresses that would sell for way more than their Repop prices at other stores. I have bought at this store: a sunny yellow bell-skirt vintage dress for $25, a gorgeous flowered headpiece for $10, and a beautiful widebrim formal sun hat for $15.
