Dad deserves a nice dinner out for his big day, and here are some father-friendly picks in Chicago.
Beautiful fresh sashimi and briny oysters make this one of the top spots for seafood in the city. Also, chowders and other soups will warm you up. Plus, great seasonal pies!
Fresh seafood, including delicious stone crab, plus several types of pie!
A Chicago classic, Morton's is my go-to spot for steak and excellent deals on bar bites.
They're revamping the bar, so in the meantime, grab a table and go hungry for the Caesar salad cart, pretzel-crusted crab cake, or, of course, steak.
The Gage offers dishes that are classics with a sense of whimsy. Try the Scotch eggs! There's also an exceptional cocktail program, so make sure to peruse a menu.
This place can do no wrong - great beer and oysters and brunch. Also try: mussels, fish stews, and roasted chicken.
You could load up on cured meats, smears, and cheeses without even broaching the rest of the Mediterranean-influenced menu, but you'll definitely want to leave room for the milk-braised pork shoulder and mussels.
The cocktail menu is enormous, but you can just point and pick at random—every single one is going to be good. Also awesome: the brunch menu, fried cheese curds, an abundant cheese plate... I could keep going.
There are steaks, of course, but there are also raw items and salads so good you won't believe you're at a steakhouse. The grilled romaine and warm spinach salad with bacon vinaigrette are must orders.
It's an awesome under-the-radar spot to go wild with kangaroo, boar, and other meats, and TVs to watch the games.
Housemade hot sauces and mignonettes nicely complement East and West coast oysters. Also try: tomato-laced mussels and clam chowder.
MJ's has to-die-for garlic bread, steaks, and excellent cocktails. The dining room is pretty, while the dark, cozy bar is perfect for private one-on-one chats.
The housemade hot dog is served with condiments on the side so you can dress it to your liking (tip: put ALL OF THEM on). Also the butterscotch miso milkshake is to-die for, and there is a spiked hot chocolate list.
Gene's is a Chicago institution - I stock upon different brats and love the pierogis.
