I love to while away an afternoon with my Kindle or latest library acquisition. Sometimes that's at a bar, or poolside, or on a train upstate. Nature, architecture, a view, beautiful music, calm atmospheres, and buzzy bars have all provided wonderful backdrops to reading in the city. These are my favorite places to read and feel inspired by the scenery in New York.
This East Village bookstore has evaded the gods of bookstore destruction thus far by providing liberal and radical literature and magazines to a loyal clientele. From liberal women's magazines to Marxist literature to pop cultural commentary to literature and more mainstream affairs, St. Marks Bookshop covers the East Village bases well.
This welcome haven from 57th Street's hustle is more a home than a store. Carpets quiet footsteps and beautiful dark wood bookshelves hold intimate histories of artists, fashion designers and famous New York characters.
I get all my friends' birthday cakes at this quirky little Italian dessert parlor that has sat on this corner since Williamsburg was Italian. It's also my spot of choice for evening snacks of beautiful marzipan and espresso. The gelato is also deliciously creamy.
When I'm in Park Slope and I have some time to kill, I take my book over to Tea Lounge for a glass of wine or a coffee and a supercomfy seat to snuggle in while reading. An excellent place to study as well.
Long lines curve around the soccer field for pupusas, tortas, tacos, ceviche, agua fresca, elote, and platanos at this food cart heaven.
How sweet it is to live in New York. We make abandoned elevated rail lines into strolling parks wonderful for meditative walking and talking. The views are fantastic -- take your tourists and guests here. Grab food at Delaney Barbecue on the High Line near the 14th Street entrance.
Gorgeous Knave runs contrary to its own name. Neither humble nor dishonest, this soaring wine bar provides gamays, tempranillos and pinot grigios to while a long hot afternoon away. Tea, coffee, simple panini and pastries are also on hand so that you can relax for hours in their luxurious covered pews, reading to your heart's content.
Why have I not previously stated all the ways in which I adore Clementine Bakery? Awesome owner Michelle makes these incredible crumble pies with blackberries, as well as to-die-for pumpkin cheesecake and cinnamon rolls. Many of her items are gluten-free and all are vegan. I love this place!
This lovely park affords viewers a gorgeous panorama of the city and Brooklyn's bridges. A new beer garden, Biba, recently opened to water the masses, and Smorgasburg vends here every weekend in the summer.
