There is no doubting the popularity of trivia in Portland, Oregon. On any given day of the week you can venture out into the (likely) rain and prove your smarts against other drinkers by answering random questions on all sorts of subjects. The following Northeast bars offer trivia, though nights vary. Check websites for details.
Tonic Lounge provides a stellar stage for local and national acts to perform. Go for the live sets and strong drinks. Most convenient: two bars in two different rooms. Pay in cash and pick whichever line is shortest.
Billy Ray's, the go-to neighborhood bar, lives up to its dive status: flowing PBR, a lot of broken stuff, and liquor stuffed in the back.
The rousing atmosphere of Rose & Thistle during soccer (football?) matches reminds me of my bartending days in Edinburgh. The rustic Caledonian interior is as reminiscent of Scotland as the fish & chips and haggis on the menu--which is a late night blessing, available until the 2:30am bar close.
While 42nd Ave has yet to possess the charm and walkability of Mississippi or Alberta Street, NePo 42 attempts to fix this by bringing quintessential Portland to the east side. Blazers games, free pool, craft beers and brunch ensures a blossoming 42nd Ave will be built around NePo 42.
Thursdays at East Burn is folk night, so head to the downstairs game room bar where you can enjoy the same menu fare and draft selection as above, with the added bonus of free skee ball below.
Cider lovers rejoice! Fifteenth Avenue Hophouse has a splendid, varied selection ranging from pear ciders to cherry ciders served in pints, tulips or whichever your preference. The Hophouse is kind to IPA and lager fans as well.
A proper neighborhood dive with ocean murals that fool no one, Maui's offers stiff drinks, free pool (Weds), pinball, and Blazers games.
