The city of Santa Clarita (aka Awesometown) is known for its overabundance of fast food and chain establishments. The SCV is the pit stop on the way to or from Northern California or after a long day at Magic Mountain. But here are a few of my local favorites that are are worth the stop.
This family-owned restaurant is one of the few indie establishments in the SCV that specializes in breakfast and lunch. I like their omelets (Denver) and breakfast wraps (especially the spinach, mushroom Swiss), but they have a great selection of soups and salads, too.
The lunch buffet (Monday-Friday from 11:30 am to 3 pm) is a steal at $9.95. Good selection of vegetarian options like saag paneer and meat options like chicken makhni. Bonus: As much fresh naan as you want with the buffet.
Don't let the name of this place fool you. Thelma's serves lunch and dinner, too. Some of our favorites include the breakfast quesadilla and the halibut for dinner. If you're not that hungry, I recommend the green salad—their miso dressing is incredible.
Lima Limon is one of the few Peruvian restaurants in the Santa Clarita Valley, and it's a good one. They offer a great selection of seafood dishes like mussels, scallops and saltado -- fried fish pieces with soy beans over a bed of a few fries and topped with a tasty pepper sauce, (served with white rice and a salad for the $8.99 lunch special).
This is more grill than market, and that's a good thing. Choose your fish like salmon, magi mahi or halibut then choose the sauce if you want like lemon butter, olive oil garlic and teriyaki. Try the rice bowl—I like mine with brown rice. It's filling, and the Asian spices are done just right.
Located in downtown Newhall, the scones here are crumbly and a little dry—EXACTLY the way scones should be. The sweet scones aren't too sweet, and I highly recommend the cinnamon chip. The cookies, especially the brown butter sea salt, are excellent.
This is one of my go-to places in the Santa Clarita area. It's upscale for Awesome, and features a mix of Cal-Asian dishes. There's a great sushi bar, but the filets are great, too. The sides like the polenta and Mac and cheese make great small dinners, too.
