Ladies First: Girls Night Out Planner
Updated: June 08, 2009
No offense, gentlemen, but on occasion the fairer sex requires face time with the ultimate nose-powdering posse--yes, we're talking about the resoundingly capital-lettered Girls Night Out. Despite the hype, the point is not necessarily the stereotypical stampede of stilettos and sunless tanners (like, OMG), but merely to uphold a comfort zone that a male presence may otherwise perturb and, of course, employ the phenomenal strength in wing-woman numbers. Gals, it's on.

Have you fallen down the rabbit hole? That's what you'll muse after stepping into the lavishly surreal, believe-it-when-you-see-it styling of this two-tiered restaurant. On the lower level, the Monday Club Bar vibrantly invites one to sip a proper cocktail while perched on zebra-print upholstery and take in the live performances on the lavender upright piano; don't miss the roaring fireplaces, which compete for attention from the storybook chandeliers. The upstairs Soiree Room quietly dazzles with pink, pink, gold, mirrors and more pink, which cocoons a more formal dining experience. Rabbit may lie delectably roasted on the seasonal menu, but we're not holding our breath for zebra quite yet.

We swear it beats therapy: Wrap your hands solidly around a ball of pin destruction, and let 'er rip for a roll that results in an endorphine-satisfying crash. Even if the last time you went bowling was for your niece's 6th birthday, now's the time to rethink the funny shoes and silly scorekeepers. Here, however, the lanes are adults only, with a full bar ensuring that bowling arm stays, uh, lubricated and special events happening every day of the week (double-up on the catharsis on karaoke Thursday nights). If you're ambitious in making the girls night out a repeat deal, form a team and join the bowling league: May the best women win.

Each week sports a rotating theme, with tantalizing giveaways and a looming, dramatic bubble of unpredictability waiting to pop.

There's girls night out, and then there's grrrls night out. With the pathetic dearth of lesbian nightlife in Boston, a strong set of pioneering ladies-first social scenes rule the roost, one of the best of which is Machine's Dyke Night, every second Saturday of the month. At this recurring party at the gay-friendly bar and club, resident DJ Kris Kono ensures the successful progression of bumps bumping and grinds grinding. Whether you join the singles-heavy crowd on the dance floor or chill out around the pool tables or the game room, the strong drink--not to mention the estrogen--will be flowing freely.

There's no shame in indulging the glamorous side of things at this flourish-heavy bar and restaurant, teeming with vintage cocktails, exotic small plates and more sequins and feathers than you can languorously shake a cigarette holder at. This is where one imagines that Miss Scarlet of Clue would while away the mischievous hours, wearing fishnet stockings and whispering bon mots across the bar. It's La Belle Epoch decor meets autographed Dita von Teese photographs, and between the over-the-top, retro-dressed waitstaff and a whirlwind menu spanning Morocco, Russia and France, you'll all soon morph into the cosmopolitan contessas you are.
