Summer yawns open to celebrate fathers the nation over on Sunday, June 21. Pure coincidence that it times perfectly with dad-friendly activities like cold beer, outdoor sports and cheesy entertainment? We think not. Take Daddy Dearest to paint the town red at a slew of amusing (and yes, bonding) activities in Boston, thereby thanking the man who taught you everything you needed to know about surviving the world, one encouraging, playful shoulder-punch at a time.

Hop On, Pop

Brunch? Eh, we did that back at Mother's Day, with mimosas and painfully delicate poached eggs. But beer-unch? Sweet! And probably way more dad's speed. The hoppy eye-opening meal is a weekly ritual at Cambridge Brewing Company, Sundays from 11:30am to 4pm, but attend on Father's Day proper for extra stout brownie-points. Make no apologies for malted French toast with bacon, a massive battered Monte Cristo sandwich or a glorious egg pileup with as many house and seasonal beers as it takes to wash it all down.

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended China Pearl Restaurant

Give dad what he really likes: a bombardment of rib-sticking snacks glistening with pork fat, plus intense entertainment of the dragon variety. Trust us. Go forth and enjoy the Chinatown Main Street Festival, from 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Start things off right with a dumpling-meets-bun snack feast at China Pearl, one of the most popular dim sum houses (hint: get there early), and meander the streets for more food, vendors and performances amidst the drummers and firecrackers. Loud and proud--kind of like Pa.

Dad will be insanely impressed if you snag him tickets to Huey Lewis and the News. Hell, who wouldn’t love to see them strut on stage on a Sunday night in New Hampshire, circa 2009? Get there early to sup like royalty on boneless Buffalo chicken tenders and nachos loaded with chili and cheese, and then prepare to get your fist-pumps out for cult beltings of 'Hip to Be Square" and "The Power of Love." We’re itching for an air guitar just thinking about it.

You vaguely remember Dear Ol' Dad admonishing you never to dip a toe in the Charles, with the threatening hazards of "dirty water." But times are a-changing, clearly. The Charles River Swimming Club hosts its third Charles River One Mile Swim on Sunday at 8am, where brave souls splash in to prove the recent pollution cleanup initiatives. The course loops between the Harvard and Longfellow Bridge, and spectatorship--or even swimming, if you're game--with your father is an experience only a Bostonian could love.

  5. 5 Larz Anderson Auto Museum

Has ever a man met a souped-up auto he didn't like? We think not. This scintillating logic leads to grass, sunshine and shiny fenders at the Auto Museum's German Car Day, held on its outdoor lawn. Commencing at 10am, the Sunday-only show oohs, aahs and oom-pa-pas through Deutschland's pinnacles of design, including Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Opel and both vintage and modern German autobahn cruisers. Gild the fender with live music and snack stands.

  6. 6 4 Star Rating: Recommended Boston Symphony Hall

Cringe if you must, but face it: Dad cuts a serious rug. The Boston Pops indulges the physical (and, often, arm-flailing) side of Boston with its "Let's Dance" boogie-meets-woogie concert (complete with dance floor) at 8pm on Sunday. Erich Kunzel conducts the tunefest as the orchestra pumps out all the favorites of yore, from swing and rock and roll to vintage disco that almost cries out for Sunday Night Fever. Symphony Hall as discotheque? Better believe it.
