Gear Up

  1. 1 Greenward
    Write a review

1764 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02140 (map)

Not only can you plop yourself onto Mother Nature to eat, but you can also commune with her through your choice of accoutrements. Specializing in modern, well-designed, eco-friendly merchandise, Greenward has green(er) gear in spades, including stylish bags that are big enough to hold a multi-course meal, bamboo utensils and dishware, reusable cups, lined cloth sandwich sacks and stainless steel thermoses. Whatever kit you assemble will be handy not only for picnics, but urban on-the-go munching as well.

  2. 2 3.5 Star Rating: Average Lekker Unique Home Furnishings
    Read Reviews

1317 Washington St, Boston, MA 02118 (map)

Quietly holding the home-design fort in South End, Lekker specializes in lifestyle and home decor that's artful, playful and alluring. The combination plays through beautifully for a well-dressed picnic. Pick up a compressible mesh-and-frame picnic basket, brilliantly colored polycarbonate flatware, fair-trade bamboo bowls and eye-poppingly patterned textiles. If you're feeling extra fancy, stock up on wine bottle stoppers and a sleek cocktail shaker for drinks en plein air.

  3. 3 4 Star Rating: Recommended Vessel

125 Kingston St, Boston, MA 02111 (map)

Nestled near the freeway, this downtown design retailer remains a diamond in the rough. Purveying tools for living (from locally forged knives to Malin & Goetz fragrances to neatly bound maps), there's a shipload of fun and portable items, including a wooden citrus reamer, perfect for from-scratch lemonade, a spice grinder--who doesn't want fresh paprika on their deviled eggs?--and candela LED lights that'll offer a warm glow in the twilight come sunset.

Splay Out

  1. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Boston Common
    Read Reviews

South side of Beacon Hill, Boston, MA 02108 (map)

Yes, it's clichéd. Yes, it's public. Yes, it's completely alive with dogs, babies, frisbees, bikinis, musicians ... essentially, it's a free-for-all, which is precisely why the Common is so damningly irresistible. At any point in the day, the lush, green hills of Boston's most central urban park thrive with pulsating energy. Just wander through until you find a pleasant enough knoll, and then decamp your party. Not only are you exploiting a plebe-worthy picnic spot, you can also indulge in people-watching at its finest.

  2. 5 3.5 Star Rating: Average Crane Beach
    Read Reviews

Argilla Rd, Ipswich, MA 01938 (map)

If yearning for sand and salt, but not quite up to braving traffic to the Cape, make your way to Ipswich and one of the most beautiful beaches on the North Shore. Under conservation efforts as a natural resource, the land is pure water-meets-sand bliss. There are showers and a quaint concession stand, but not much else. Slather on the sunscreen, tote as much elaborate beach furniture as you like and keep some bags on hand for easy cleanup. Snacks always taste better at the beach. Always.

  3. 6 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Esplanade
    Read Reviews

Storrow Dr, Boston, MA 02116 (map)

Just thinking about the picturesque sailboats, glittering water and sunny perches makes us sigh with delight. Hugging the Charles with grassy gardens, paved paths and smooth piers, the Esplanade generously accommodates the city's most sun-craving participants: joggers, cyclists and promenaders aplenty. Add picnickers to the list, who can plop down and enjoy the cool breeze coming from the river. As long as you make nice with the geese, the day shall remain worry-free.

  4. 7 Ma Institute Of Technology
    Write a review

77 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139 (map)

Rarely does one get a chance to sit back and soak up the Boston skyline, especially surrounded by some of Cambridge's best and brightest. Mind the swarms of MIT students and step into hidden oasis of Killian Court, the proverbial "quad" or "yard," a green patch whose gravitational force increases exponentially to the loveliness of the weather. Walk down Memorial Drive or scurry through the "infinite corridor" of connected buildings to arrive at one of the best grassy seats in the house along the river.

Procure Provisions

  1. 8 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Bauer Wines Limited
    Read Reviews

330 Newbury St, Boston, MA 02115 (map)

We're not going to condone anything illegal ... but we're sure you might get thirsty on your picnic, and trust that discretion will be taken. That said, dip into your favorite local liquor store (Bauer is a great place to start) for fortifications. Inexpensive Cava or Prosecco is perfect for sunny celebrations, not to mention easy-to-drink quaffs like Grüner Veltliner, Vouvray and Beaujolais Nouveau. Pink cans of Sofia Blanc de Blancs are perfectly incognito with straws. And score some beer, natch--just don't forget the koozie.

  2. 9 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Darwin's Limited
    Read Reviews

1629 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA 02138 (map)

This deli's sandwiches are the real-life embodiment of the fictional Dagwood's mile-high creations. That is to say, these are the Best. Sandwiches. Ever. Cheekily named after local neighborhood streets (The Ellery, The Trowbridge), the overstuffed offerings are the epitome of high-quality ingredients assembled with love, and well suited for a delicious afternoon picnic. The coffee ain't shabby, either, and you can stock up on fancy snacks, fruit and cheese in the adjoining specialty market.

  3. 10 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Formaggio Kitchen Inc
    Read Reviews

244 Huron Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138 (map)

One word that would never describe Formaggio: pedestrian. This gourmet grocer packs in more taste (in all senses of the word) per square inch than anyone could imagine, from locally baked B&R breads, to snackable Marcona almonds and Ligurian olives, to the most curated cheese collection in town--courtesy of renowned cheesemonger Ihsan Gurdal. The goods--and prices--are admittedly posh, but this is the stopover for the uncompromising palate, for supplementing any picnic with swanky flourish.
