Fried, salty, stewed pork heaven: Carnitas rank right up there with carne asada on the list of our favorite Mexican taco fillers. Here are five spots that do it right in San Diego.

The original Carnitas Urapan sits across the border in Tijuana, but the wait to order at this Lemon Grove location can be longer than the border wait at San Ysidro. But, as everyone has discovered, the carnitas here are worth the wait.
If the name makes you a tad uncomfortable, you're not alone. Our advice? Just ignore it, and order more carnitas. They're made and served in the traditional way with tortillas on the side, and one order comes with plenty of meat for two, here.
Tucked in between dozens of taco shops and liquor stores along a colorful strip of University Ave, Morelianas serves up some of the best carnitas in the Uptown area. Plan ahead for a bit of a wait during lunch hours on weekdays.
As far as "best of" lists go, Super Cocina lands on almost all of them regarding Mexican food. Here, we'd like to highlight their carnitas. It's one of the handful of menu items they serve all the time (others rotate on and off th emenu daily), and they are worth the search (and sketchy parking situation) in City Heights.
