5 Carnitas Spots in San Diego

Carnitas Uruapan Mexican

8035 Broadway, Lemon Grove, CA 91945

The original Carnitas Urapan sits across the border in Tijuana, but the wait to order at this Lemon Grove location can be longer than the border wait at San Ysidro. But, as everyone has discovered, the carnitas here are worth the wait.

646 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92103

If the name makes you a tad uncomfortable, you're not alone. Our advice? Just ignore it, and order more carnitas. They're made and served in the traditional way with tortillas on the side, and one order comes with plenty of meat for two, here.

Las Morelianas Carnitas Estilo

3645 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104

Tucked in between dozens of taco shops and liquor stores along a colorful strip of University Ave, Morelianas serves up some of the best carnitas in the Uptown area. Plan ahead for a bit of a wait during lunch hours on weekdays.

Super Cocina

3627 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104

As far as "best of" lists go, Super Cocina lands on almost all of them regarding Mexican food. Here, we'd like to highlight their carnitas. It's one of the handful of menu items they serve all the time (others rotate on and off th emenu daily), and they are worth the search (and sketchy parking situation) in City Heights.

Tacos El Paisa

840 S 47th St, San Diego, CA 92113

Paisa, housed in a bright yellow cottage on Highland Avenue, is the go-to spot in South Bay for good carnitas. We love the fresh, cool melon salad, too.
