You eat organic, shop local and take mass transit, but have you given a second thought to what gets put on your skin at the spa? Be one with nature and get seriously relaxed at these Boston spas that use natural, often chemical-free, components. Between botanically based product lines and sacred ancient techniques, your body will be cleansed of impurities with no guilt-trip strings attached.

How Glow Can You Go

  1. 1 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Alexander's Spa & Salon

154 Main St, Wenham, MA 01984 (map)

You're in for a nurture-fest at this spa--not the least for its quaint location in an adorable Victorian house, where chic and cozy are two sides of the same coin. Namesake owner and esthetician Maria Lekkakos (a local beauty who snagged the Miss Massachusetts sash in 2004) is the only therapist in New England who uses the 100-percent all-natural and organic Osmosis skincare line (Alicia Silverstone is a fan) in facials and peels. The stuff is composed of eight different ingredients (17 antioxidants, enzymes, proteins, lipids and immune cells) that deliver nutrients rapid-fire into the skin. Intense.

  2. 2 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended MiniLuxe

Flinging organic pears and collard greens in your grocery cart may be second nature, but have you thought about what chemicals you've been otherwise subjecting that throwing arm to? We rest our case, fancy fingers. Day spa MiniLuxe already gets a blue ribbon for its obsessive standards in health and hygiene by autoclaving all instruments and sterilizing the bejesus out of the studio. But you can ratchet the goodness up to supernatural heights with an organic mani-pedi, employing cruelty-free Shea Terra Organics products with not a sulfate, paraben, silicone, artificial coloring or synthetic fragrance in sight.

  3. 3 4 Star Rating: Recommended Nami Spa

262 Beacon St, Fl 6, Boston, MA 02116 (map)

Despite overlooking the Charles River on its perch in posh Back Bay, Nami still exudes a quaint, neighborly charm. What's not to love about a spa that gives regular discount to students, military, police officers and fire fighters and that serves quickie therapy treatments during lunch hour with ham and cheese sandwiches on order? Within these walls, there's definitely down-to-earth care of mind, body and spirit; accordingly, the spa's product lines reflects nature's graces, including USDA-organic certified Juice Beauty, Asian plant-based ReishiMED and not-tested-on-animals 4VOO men's line.

  4. 4 The Spa at The Mandarin Oriental

776 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02199 (map)

The luxury hotel's Signature Spa Therapy begins and ends with a resonant hand-struck chime. The customized aromatherapeutic bodywork session, entrenched in traditional Chinese medicine, sandwiches an ungodly amount of bliss between those two tolls. After a personalized well-being diagnosis, the treatment opens with a massage, which incorporates the Mandarin Oriental's exclusive line of body oils in one of five elements--wood, fire, earth, metal and water--to ease the body back into balance. Produced by Aromatherapy Associates, the entire line contains natural ingredients and is paraben-free, with the oils blended by a master blender to Mandarin Oriental's specifications. Your only task? Just breathe.

  5. 5 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Violet Skin Boutique
    Read Reviews

1362 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02446 (map)

Though we don't recommend actually ingesting them, these skincare ingredients--chocolate oil, honey, wild rose syrup--sound rather tasty. Such is the natural and effective appeal of Violet's squeaky-clean proprietary line of chemical- and preservative-free skin and hair products, which are used on-site in aromatherapy massages, luxury facials and signature body treatments. Owner, esthetician and biochemistry major Violet Mkhitaryan knows her stuff, specializing in all skin types including custom treatments for eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
