A tempting yet wholesome spread fills the countertop of Flying Apron Organic Bakery. Almost all of these delectables are gluten-free, vegan, and organic (and the ingredients are posted, so you can double-check). Enjoy your treats in the cozy and subdued cafe, decorated with dark wood tables and stained-glass lamps. Our pick: the apricot thumbprint?made with garbanzo bean flour and brown rice flour for a nutty contrast to the sweet Turkish apricot filling.
Try something adventurous at 'Zaw Artisan Pizza, with one of their quirky topping combinations, like chicken and apricots--or a tangy, Vietnamese-inspired pizza with just a pinch of spice. If you're wary of these choices, they also make more traditional pizzas, which are just as delicious. The clincher: all of 'Zaw's crusts can be made gluten-free.
Bright and cheerful, Cafe Flora is a great escape on grey days. While not entirely wheat-free, they serve a variety of delicious gluten-free dishes, noted on the menu. These range from traditional American egg scrambles to creative Mexican or Mediterranean-inspired dishes, like falafel or Oaxaca tacos. Sit in the inside garden room, surrounded by foliage, while noshing on your local (and gluten-free!) meal.
Treat your body right and do your grocery shopping at Sidecar for Pigs Peace. This U-District store is as quirky as its name, specializing in vegan products, but great for anyone with a special diet. Offering grainless cereals, soy cheese, and gluten-free zucchini bread muffins. Bonus points: all purchases benefit Pigs Peace Sanctuary, a non-profit offering a safe place for unwanted and neglected animals.
