Boston Playbook for a Dudes-Only Night Out
Updated: August 13, 2009
Beer, shots, pool, bowling and greasy food comprise the ultimate formula for an epic guys-only hangout. And there's only one rule allowed: No rules. And as the night grows long, there shall be no such thing as indulging in too many vices or ordering one too many whiskeys. Remember, it’s all in the name of rugged, strident, world-weary bromance.
It's Party Time, Gentlemen

Bond Restaurant and Lounge
Read Reviews250 Franklin St, Boston, MA 02110 (map)
Nothing screams baller like Champagne bottle service. Party like the vaguely conspiciously consumptive rockstar you are in Bond’s VIP Dom Perignon lounge. It's intimate enough that your posse will earn extra exclusivity points. And the setting is sumptuous, too--you know, the place to get your player on. If you peer onto the proletariat partiers below, you'll admit the magnificent open-to-all lounge isn’t too shabby, either. DJs spin dance cuts Wednesday through Saturday; mark your territory, gentlemen.

Cask 'n Flagon

Whether you're in the mood for sports, food or weekend nightlife near Fenway (really, what else is there to live for?), the Cask reigns as a year-round no-holds-barred hangout. During baseball season, especially during home games, the enormous sports bar seethes with sheer Sox fervor. It's a no-brainer place for a posse to pummel through pints over a game broadcast on one of the seemingly gazillion HD TVs. Thursday through Saturday, Oliver's (located within the Cask) has live music and DJs--so when the sports take a break, the party continues.

Champions

You're with the boys; might as well knock around some balls, right? We're talking billiards, of course. (Of course.) Tucked inside the Boston Marriott Copley Place, Champions is a piece of Boston sporting life. The beloved first Champions sports bar was a mellow, old-school spot to enjoy a game. The recharged Champions is the rebooted 21st century version, with more than 30 TV screens throughout the bar and lounge areas. The beer list is extensive with 60-plus brews--do your darndest to obliterate them.

Charlie's Kitchen
Read Reviews10 Eliot St, Cambridge, MA 02138 (map)
Hairy hipster alert: This Harvard Square favorite attracts a younger, tat ‘n’ bearded, rock ‘n’ rollish crowd. So, men, don't be afraid to let your hair down--and out. The upstairs has a well-stocked jukebox with classic punk, new wave and rock. Some nights a band crams into a corner of the room, playing late and loud. The first floor is the place for cheapish, diner-style food, while the outdoors beer garden is a great summer haunt. Most nights the whole place is crowded, so it always feels like a party.

Church Restaurant & Nightclub
Read Reviews69 Kilmarnock St, Boston, MA 02215 (map)
For that morning-after man meet-up, there’s no beating Church’s bloody marys: Choose either the Angel Gabriel (bacon-infused vodka) or the Angel Michael (veggie-infused). Even if you spent the last night hitting shots--billiards or tequila--in Church’s live music club next door, Church’s hip restaurant gives the hungover soul a respite. Try the wittily titled Eggs Benedictine with a Twist (poached eggs in tarragon hollandaise with meaty crab cakes) for some soothing perspective.

Dick's Last Resort

Leave your, ahem, fine-tuned manners at the door, guys. The deliberately down-market and divey Dick’s welcomes ill-behaved guests in its own sour way. So go to town with your attitude, men: The wait staff is deliberately obnoxious and surly, the seating family-style and the menu hearty. The Buffalo wings are highly favored or go upscale with a great deal on king crab legs. Such unhip cocktails as the Blue Hawaiian are a specialty, especially for Dick’s twice-yearly celebration for that guy among guys: Elvis Presley.

Foxwoods Resort Casino / MGM Grand at Foxwoods
Write a review39 Norwhich Westerly Rd, Mashantucket, CT 06339 (map)
For a wild, swingers-style night or weekend to remember--or to forget--Foxwoods & MGM Grand and Mohegan Sun are less than two hours from Boston. Each is bursting with nightlife, gambling, restaurants and bars aplenty. Foxwoods' enormous upscale Shrine nightclub and The Scorpion Bar, a snazzy cantina with knockout margaritas, appeal to the urban crowd. Get to high-rolling, big spender.

Kings
Read Reviews50 Dalton Street, Boston, MA 02115 (map)
Is there anything more male-bonding-friendly than bowling--especially when spewing "Big Lebowski" references and throwing post-strike fist-pumps? Kings bowling and billiards palace is noisy fun, and the food in the Deville Lounge--diners get priority for lanes--is surprisingly good considering it's a bowling alley. For larger groups of 12 or more, Kings will work up a food, bowling or billiards party plan. Plus, you can kid yourself you're getting some exercise, too.

Redbones
Read Reviews55 Chester St, Somerville, MA 02144 (map)
Beer and barbecue--need we say more, guys? Ready your red-blooded, flesh-eating impulses for a down-n-dirty feast, made even better by super-hoppy beer and saucy-as-hell servers. Are you man enough to tear through beef ribs, chicken and pulled pork with all the unabashedly artery-clogging Southern fixings? We think so. Extra soul sustenance is found on the mighty beer list, which includes regional craft brews and old-school cask-conditioned ale.

Sunset Grill & Tap
Read Reviews130 Brighton Ave, Allston, MA 02134 (map)
Not all men feed like thoughtless carnivores. Enter this Allson veteran, which is more than just a no-nonsense craft beer and casual food joint. Along with a whopping 100-plus beers, the menu offers sustainable, local and even organic products where possible, and much of the seafood and meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free and humanely raised. It’s a place where guys can quaff down a fine glass of mead and gnaw on a hunk of meat without abandoning their sensitive sides.
