Where to Spend Labor Day in Miami

Even the fiercest of workaholics can use a day off. Given the brutally hot summer that South Florida is experiencing, we can all use a day to cool off, too. From indoor powwows to watery outdoor getaways, let's commemorate a holiday dedicated to working by doing as little as possible around town.

Outdoor Fun

Venetian Pool

2701 De Soto Blvd, Coral Gables, FL 33134

The spring-fed waters are chilly, even on the hottest summer days. You can also explore submerged caverns, jagged coral diving platforms, and be massaged by cascading waterfalls. Coral Gables recently refurbished its chilly watering hole, adding expanded locker facilities and restoring its landmark features. Bring a camera, ideally a waterproof one.

Matheson Hammock Marina

9610 Old Cutler Rd, Coral Gables, FL 33156

If the traditional beaches are too crowded, locals know how to find this tropical hideaway. The manmade atoll offers calm and cool waters, and plenty of beach sand to play in. There's a lifeguard on duty, though the waters never run too deep.

Miami Seaquarium

4400 Rickenbacker Cswy, Key Biscayne, FL 33149

Dolphin swim experiences aren't cheap, but there's nothing like slapping on a swimsuit and having a friendly mammal tug you across the icy lagoon. If the dolphin encounters are all booked or too steeply priced, the original marine life park offers plenty of opportunities to get close to dolphins, killer whales, and sea lions as they perform. Sit in the first three rows of the killer whale show if you truly need to cool off.

Grapeland Water Park

1550 NW 37th Ave, Miami, FL 33125

Miami's municipal water park is a 13-acre playground of chlorinated fun. Expect to wait in a long line for the Buccaneer River Ride, the lazy river attraction that meanders through 600 feet of watery obstacles. You can splash right into any of the other pools and kiddie diversions.

Labor Day Weekend Events

Bayfront Park Management Trust

301 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132

You don't need to be a Zen master to enjoy the crisp bay breeze and dazzling skyline vistas during this free class for beginning and advanced yoga buffs. Just make sure you're over 18, and bring your own mat, water bottle, and towel. The Monday class runs from 6pm until 7:15pm.

South Beach

Eighth St and Ocean Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33139

There are no official Labor Day celebrations in the city's nightlife underbelly, but the Ocean Drive circus always comes to town during holiday weekends when the hotels are packed and tourists are club and hotel bar hopping. Just stroll down Ocean, Collins, or Washington. If you don't find the party, it will find you.

Hyatt Regency Miami

400 South East Second Avenue, Miami, FL 32836

While the party people spend the holiday weekend checking mates, their brainier counterparts will be angling towards checkmate at the Miami Chess Open. As much as $25,000 in prize money hangs in the balance as the final sixth and seventh rounds of the championship tourney crown the ultimate victor. Everyone else may as well hit the pawn shop.
