This season, tightened budgets and saving are in. Good thing everyone knows that looking good doing the above life-affirming things is essential. Updating your wardrobe can be done simply and on the cheap with the integration of a few key pieces. With a new emphasis on defined shoulders and the continued fixation on a nipped-in waist, the new silhouette is slim. Add these musts to your closet for that fresh fall look.

PENCIL SKIRT: Ride the "Mad Men" wave with the most versatile wardrobe element a woman can have: a slim-fitting, to-the-knee or longer pencil skirt. In black, gray, or eggplant, this can be worn multiple times a week to the office, or in the evening when properly accessorized. Pair it with a t-shirt for casual outings, or let it be the backdrop for that ornate blouse. One in a bright color may get slightly less milage but is way fun to wear. Think of this as the second go-to item after your favorite jeans.
MOTORCYCLE JACKET: Wrong moment to drag that bulky vintage Ramones-esque leather motorcycle jacket out of the closet. This sleeker update is cropped and very slim-fitting, with a slightly defined shoulder. Black is fine but this a good place to try a shade of gray, color, or one of the new metallics for night--and remember, mixing metals and not matching them is the only way not to look like a Florida granny.
JEANS: From legging-skinny to the baggier "boyfriend" cut, we are well aware that many men are fans of skinny jeans, but the wider-legged, loose-fitting jeans of this season are getting the "boyfriend" moniker. It is a universal law that a new pair of jeans is always a morale booster. Try out a new silhouette in a new wash.
STATEMENT NECKLACE: There is no better way to dress up a simple t-shirt and jeans (or pencil skirt) than with an elaborate necklace, as clothes will become the backdrop to the piece. The new shape is a lattice that covers almost the entire breast bone. One in a bold color stands out even more. A collection of colored stones will reflect off the face, so choose colors that are harmonious with your skin tones.
ANKLE BOOTS: While boots are a wardrobe staple with a function that goes year round, this year the short version with a thicker, stacked heel are the trend that will update a look. The word "chunky" should be saved for soup, but these new little boots come close in that they are phone book-sized. These are a good way to rough up a dainty dress or slim skirt.
