My five fave spots in Heat-town

Poison Girl

1641 Westheimer RdSte B, Houston, TX 77006

Super hipster, super chill. Poison Girl is the Houston refuge to go drink and admire. From the erotic wall art to the chalkboard table to the corridor of vintage pin ball machines, this ain't no Texas Pub. Better yet, identical to one of those word-of-mouth "scenester" havens right out of LA county's edgy Silverlake neighborhood. Don't forget to walk to the back courtyard to grab a seat on your grandmother's painted wrought iron lawn chair that she used as yard decor in 1954. Places like Poison Girl are the reason why I flock to the big cities: diversity. Jack on the rocks and some change for the pin ball machine, please...

13 Celsius

3000 Caroline St., Houston, TX 77004

Wine and intellectual conversation. 13 Celsius' location emulates its interior ora: a bit off the beaten path. As a Sunday night regular at 13 Celsius, my face lights up a bit every time I take a seat in my favorite love seat with my favorite amigos. Half price on all open bottles from the Friday/ Saturday weekend crowd might put a little twinkle in my eye as well. An edgy local artist has put a bit of a USPS flare on the rear wall, which pairs extraordinarily well with the restored concrete shell of a building. "13" is not so much of a see-and-be-seen, it feels as if it open just for you and your crew. See you Sunday.
