We here at Citysearch love any excuse to drink, dine or be entertained. Usually this comes in the form of new restaurants or fashionable events, but occasionally we like stretch things a bit to get what we want. In honor of Pi Day (March 14th), we give you all things pie in Atlanta, from sweet Southern pies to savory Aussie meat pies. Fans of everything flaky, doughy and filled, this day's for you.

If you're going to get this old-school, chilled Southern staple, we suggest you enjoy it at one of Atlanta's institutions, the Silver Skillet. Made with a graham cracker crust and topped with a crunchy rim of vanilla wafers, this is a no-nonsense, tart treat that's especially good when it's hot outside.
Perhaps the least sexy, but most filling, pie option is the chicken pot pie. This comforting old American staple gets serious entree attention at Midtown's brand-spanking-new beer bar, Hobnob. A wonderfully flaky crust reveals hearty smoked chicken and the usual pea/carrot/potato suspects. Also note, this pie is accompanied by a great beer list.
Atlantans are finally able to proclaim we have some pretty good pizza. Much of this success has come solely from a one Mr. Jeff Varasano, whose restaurant got incredible buzz (like from the NY Times) before it even opened. And amazingly, Varasano's has actually lived up to the hype, delivering `za that's pretty darn close to NY standards while sparking a pizza war (and national awareness) for Atlanta. Get the Nana's special and thank us later.
What the hell is an Australian meat pie? Let us tell you. These individual-sized meat pies are encrusted in a buttery puff pastry that is flaky yet holds a heavy filling without falling apart. Inside, the meat is ground fine, spiced and sauced with a touch of brown gravy. It's like miniaturizing beef stew and stuffing it in a pot-pie crust. We approve.
Atlanta lacks a true pie shop, but Southern Sweets Bakery more than makes up for it. While their menu boasts cakes of all sorts (pound, cheese, layered) as well as some 14 types of cookies, they have pies equally on lockdown. Traditional apple pie, key lime, pecan, tarts, even vegan-friendly pies line the shelves at this Decatur bake shop.
