Journey to Julian

Julian Pie Co

2225 Main St, Julian, CA 92036

The Smothers family pie shop started in 1986 and now ships pies all over San Diego and Riverside Counties. The most popular flavors include the traditional apple (made with Granny Smith apples), Dutch, boysenberry-apple and pecan.

Mom's Pie House

2119 Main St, Julian, CA 92036

During Julian's Apple Days Festival, the shop makes more than 1,000 pies per weekend day. The bakers roll out the dough in the front window, where there is usually a line of people salivating with anticipation at the apple crumb, bumbleberry (blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry) or strawberry-rhubarb pie. Seasonal flavors include pumpkin and cherry.

Stick Around San Diego

V G Donuts & Bakery

106 Aberdeen Dr, Cardiff By The Sea, CA 92007

Although it's better known for its doughnuts, this busy North County spot serves extraordinarily tasty deep-dish pies in varieties such as apple, cherry, pumpkin and coconut cream. And at just $9 per pie, it's a steal.

Edelweiss Bakery

11639 Duenda Rd, San Diego, CA 92127

Since 1965, the Rancho Bernardo bakery has offered a full menu of cakes, pastries, cookies, and pies. A seasonal standout is the fresh peach pie, made with an all-butter crust, fresh peaches and butter crumbs on top.

City Delicatessen & Bakery

535 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92103

Cravings for banana cream pie or key lime can be surprisingly hard to satisfy in San Diego. Fortunately, the kitchen of this deli on University Avenue churns out a wide assortment of fresh cream pies daily, including banana, coconut, chocolate and lemon meringue.

Michele Coulon Dessertier

7556 Fay Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037

The upscale La Jolla bakery serves traditional American pies made with seasonal fruit or pumpkin. For a European twist, try one of the tartes--a pastry filled with almond cream and baked with apples, berries or pears poached in white wine sauce.

Elizabethan Desserts

155 Quail Gardens Dr, Encinitas, CA 92024

Nestled in the red roof building inside Sunshine Gardens Nursery in Encinitas, find desserts crafted with fresh organic fruits and no artificial flavoring. The pies are as beautiful as they are delicious: highlights include the banana cream pie and blackbird pie.

Carlsbad Danish Bakery

2805 Roosevelt St, Carlsbad, CA 92008

So you're itching for some pie but the idea of having a whole pie in your fridge is enough to make you give up and cancel your gym membership. The compromise? Get off the I-5 at Carlsbad Village Drive for a taste of Copenhagen in the form of individual fruit danishes.

Crest Cafe

425 Robinson Ave, San Diego, CA 92103

The fit 'n' trim men who frequent Urban Mo's and Lei Lounge must be resisting the temptations offered by this comfort food destination in Hillcrest. The deep-dish apple pie and peach cobbler are served warm with Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream.

Du-Par's

3711 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110

Inside the restaurant's bakery case, find a rotating selection of fresh pies available for take-out 24/7, making it a quick and easy stop before an office potluck or family gathering. Flavors include blueberry cream cheese, southern pecan, and chocolate meringue. Be sure to ask about the pie of the month.
