Best Restaurants in Sugar Land

Mostly national chains or younger siblings to Inner Loop originals, restaurants in Sugar Land don't necessarily inspire confidence in serious eaters. But contrary to popular belief, there is good food to be found in this Houston suburb, including a bounty of ethnic chow. Follow our lead to some of our Sugar Land favorites. (Photo: Cafe India)

Restaurants in Sugar Land

Live Oak Grill

12935 Dairy Ashford Rd, Sugar Land, TX 77478

Should the manicured lawns and neat rows of houses make you forget you're in Texas, this is the place to help you remember. Country favorites like fried chicken and juicy burgers are done right at this little island of Hill Country out in the `burbs.

Thai Siam

11581 S Hwy 6, Sugar Land, TX 77478

Though the strip mall is unassuming and the dining room is small, we think the fishcakes and Massamun curry at Thai Siam rival that of any inside the Loop.

Jade Garden Chinese Cuisine

4555 Highway 6, Sugar Land, TX 77478

Wedged into the strip center that is essentially Sugar Land's Chinatown, this is the local Houston favorite for dim sum. The restaurant doesn't employ the push carts of larger venues, but all the standard items are available on the menu.

Chaat House

16338 Kensington Dr # 160, Sugar Land, TX 77479

As the name suggests, the specialty at this restaurant hidden behind the local Target is chaat, a street food popular all over India. The combination of puffed rice, potatoes, chiles and chutney is super flavorful and a super bargain.

Cafe India

2319 Williams Trace Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77478

Popular with the office lunch crowd, the buffet offers a small but satisfying spread of goat curry, samosas and garlic naan. Surprisingly, the chicken wings in particular have quite the fan base.

Lopez Mexican Restaurant

11606 S Wilcrest Dr, Houston, TX 77099

Although not technically in Sugar Land, many Sugar Land natives make the short drive for this mom and pop Tex-Mex that trumps anything coming out of the nearby mega chains.

Old Place Cafe

4555 Highway 6 N, Houston, TX 77084

For an un-fancy, weekday dinner, this is a go-to Houston restaurant for both pan-fried and steamed dumplings. Take-out is a popular option but your beef noodle soup will taste much better if you plonk down on one of the benches and enjoy it while it's fresh.
