Ice Cream and Frozen Treats in Boston

Kickass Cupcakes

378 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02144

While Kickass is best known for cupcakes, they also operate the Dairy Bar next door--purveyor of all things butter, cheese, milk and cream. You can also get quarts and scoops of locally-made Shaw Farm ice cream. Where else in the city can you get ice cream made on a farm that also produced the milk and cream?

Rancatore's Ice Cream and Yogurt

36 Leonard St, Belmont, MA 02478

This is the Boston area's best kept ice cream secret. Rancatore's is owned by Joe Rancatore, whose brother Gus owns another well-known ice cream shop in the area. If you can make it out to Belmont or Lexington, it is highly advisable. Flavors are unique and expertly executed: sweet cream, callebaut milk chocolate and molasses ginger snap to name a few. The sundaes are out of this world, made with housemade hot fudge and freshly whipped cream.

Christina's Homemade Ice Cream

1255 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA 02139

It's hard to judge the best ice cream in Boston, but many people would say it is Christina's. Tucked away in Inman Square, many people hear about it year after year and still have not tried it. Which is a shame, as devotees swear by grownup flavors like burnt sugar and Taza chocolate.

The Chocolate Tarte

199c Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02143

Two words: brownie sundae. As if baker Linda Hein's brownies were not sublime enough on their own, with temperatures rising, the chocolate tarte now offers scoops of locally made SoCo Creamery ice cream. Get a scoop on its own, flavors like dirty chocolate and mission fig, or get it alongside one of Linda's divine confections: cupcakes, tarts, brownies and more.

Toscanini's Ice Cream

899 Main St, Cambridge, MA 02139

No Boston ice cream list is complete without including Toscanini's. The New York Times deemed Tosci's the best ice cream in the world some years back. There is no shortage of flavor options: Green Tea, Cocoa Pudding, Strawberry Rhubarb, Grape Nut Raisin, Raspberry, Burnt Caramel, Hydrox Cookie, the list goes own. Owner Gus is always thinking up new flavors and there is always sure to be something for everyone.
