Boston's Cupcake Craze

The craze that started at Magnolia Bakery in Manhattan is reaching its peak here in Boston. In nearly every neighborhood, you can find bakeries catering to our obsession with these little paper-wrapped wonders. This list highlights local cupcake shops worth visiting, depending on the preferences of your palate. [Photo bookgrl on flickr]

The Best

Party Favors

1356 Beacon St, Brookline, MA 02446

There is a reason why Party Favors was voted #1 wedding cake in Boston for the past few of years, and this prestige also carries into their cupcakes. The cupcakes are always fresh and moist with that just popped out of the cupcake pan quality. The frosting is buttercream and applied just right. On top of that, the cupcakes are beautifully decorated and come in two sizes. The largest size can be easily shared with another person (or with yourself if you're looking to satisfy your inner cupcake monster).

Kickass Cupcakes

378 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02144

If you're on the other side of the river and can't make it over to Party Favors, Kickass Cupcakes will not disappoint you. My tastebuds couldn't have been any happier when the first bite of a strawberry shortcake cupcake passed my lips. This cupcake had fresh strawberries in the center AND on top. In fact, I was so happy that I swang my feet while I sat on a parkbench eating it. This shop is not to be missed.

Better

Sweet Cupcakes

Brattle St, Cambridge, MA 02138

Sweet Cupcakes will definitely keep your sweet tooth happy with their varied selection. The interior will delight girlie girls, especially the ones who adore all things pink.

Good

Cherry Bomb Bakery

379 Washington St, Brighton, MA 02135

Brighton Center recently welcomed Cherry Bomb Bakery and its retro inspired cupcakes. While not as delectable as cupcakes from other bakeries, Cherry Bomb is a suitable alternative for Brighton Center residents.

Rosie's Bakery

1796 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02140

If a non-cupcake eater happens to accompany you to Rosie's, don't let it bother you too much. Rosie's also has other baked goods to enjoy. If you live in the neighborhood, Rosie's is good enough to satisfy.
