5 to Try: Red Velvet in LA

What's old is new again. Red velvet cake, a traditional Southern sweet, has been experiencing a revival lately and it's now a staple on just about every bakery and dessert menu in LA. Taking note, some bakers have gotten experimental with their red velvet treats in order to stand out. Say hello to the next generation of red velvet in Los Angeles.

LA's Unique Red Velvet Treats

Deluscious Cookies & Milk

829 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Specializing in gourmet cookies, Deluscious bakes up cookies that are unrivaled in both taste and class. Recently added to their Couture Line (yes, you heard that right--they have a couture cookie line!) is a made-to-order, heart-shaped red velvet cookie. The cake-like cookie is filled with buttercream and white chocolate, then hand-dipped in dark chocolate. While Deluscious cookies are sold at a few retail locations around town, these special treats must be ordered through their shop directly.

Yogurt Stop

8803 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069

What do you get when you combine two of the hottest dessert trends? Red velvet frozen yogurt, of course! Yogurt Stop, which serves up some of the best fro-yo in West Hollywood, has mixed up this super treat that will knock your socks off. Named after PR guru Jonathan Cheban (from that awful "reality" show "Spindustry"), the Ribbed & Rockin' XL Red Velvet Cheban Cake will satisfy your sweetest red velvet cravings.

The Cheesecake Factory

15301 Ventura Blvd Ste P1, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403

If you can't beat them, join them. That was the Cheesecake Factory's plan of attack for dealing with the overwhelming popularity of red velvet cake these days. Stefanie's Ultimate Red Velvet Cheesecake is actually not a red velvet flavored cheesecake, but a layered cake alternating between classic red velvet cake and their original cheesecake. And let's not forget the cream cheese frosting!

Griddle Cafe

7916 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Making every dessert-for-breakfast dream come true, the Griddle has done it again with their red velvet pancakes. Expect red velvet pancakes the size of your plate covered in cream cheese frosting and dusted with cocoa powder. Is your mouth watering yet?

Eagle Rock Brewery

3056 Roswell St, Los Angeles, CA 90065

Need something to wash down all those other red velvet treats? Eagle Rock Brewery has just the thing: red velvet beer. That's right, red velvet beer. But don't go making that ?yuck? face just yet. There's no actual cake batter in their Imperial Red Velvet Ale. Instead, the name is a reflection of the silky, velvety texture of the beer. It goes down smooth ... and probably goes very well with a piece of red velvet cake.
