Old-Fashioned Barbershops in Houston

Gents, we know you have your reasons for hitting the mega-chains for your haircut. There are flatscreens showing the game and a woman in a tank top will massage your scalp. And, while that does sound appealing, might we suggest your friendly local barbershop as an alternative? A hot shave with a straight razor is not only an art, it's a heavenly gift. And retro is in. Haven't you seen Mad Men?

Old-Fashioned Barbershops in Houston

Doug's Barber Shop

219 E 11th St, Houston, TX 77008

This Heights barbershop is the one famously featured in Wes Anderson's ?Rushmore" and you'll notice a lot of similarities between the fictional and real versions. All novelty factors aside, come for an old-fashioned haircut with nary an electric clipper in sight.

Times Barber Shop

2041 Southwest Fwy, Houston, TX 77098

Between the leather chairs and sports memorabilia on the wall, this old-fashioned barbershop is the epitome of cozy man cave. A man has not lived until he's experienced a hot lather shave.

Memorial Barber Shop

5510 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77007

While the stylists at this barbershop also cut hair for women and children, their specialty is both shaves and haircuts with a straight razor. They also offer flat tops, but we don't particularly recommend taking them up on that.

Bellaire's Original Barber Shop

5400 Bissonnet St# 11, Bellaire, TX 77401

There's no reason to look untidy when the barbers at this shop will trim your mustache for $2, among their other reasonably priced hot-shave and haircut services. And if you're rocking the Vin Diesel-style bald head, get it shaved without fear of nicks.

Raymond's Barber Shop

812 Jackson Hill St, Houston, TX 77007

There are only two chairs at this Heights barbershop so there is often a wait (even at dawn when cops line up for their trim), but there are Playboys to pass the time and it really doesn't get more salt of the earth than this.
