Body Tune-Ups in Portland

The days are short and cold, and that can only mean one thing: It's time for a personal tune-up. It's the best time of year to cleanse or simply adjust your alignment. These are my favorite spots to revitalize and get revved up. (Photo credit: Flickr thomaswanhoff)

Vida Massage

4317 NE Tillamook St, Portland, OR 97213 (map)

I spring for a deep tissue massage here every couple of months. Both the space--with attractive, soothing tones and warm lighting--and the masseuse, Gloria, strike an ideal balance between nourishing and professional.

Khalsa Chiropractic Clinic

5013 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97215 (map)

Apparently, there are two professions prone to displaced ribs: surgeons and writers. I first encountered the painful ailment last year and was sent straight to Dr. Khalsa. With a few precise adjustments, my range of motion was instantly restored. Now I visit regularly, where appointments start with electrotherapy (bizarre at first, strangely comforting over time). Khalsa is no-nonsense, professional, and patiently answers questions.

Beaverton Jade Sauna

4260 SW 110th Ave, Beaverton, OR 97005 (map)

When my friend Young referred me to this Korean sauna she told me they exfoliate your entire body--your ENTIRE body. And, boy, did she mean it. After steaming in various saunas--one with a sea salt floor--you'll be scrubbed vigorously from head to toe. It might sting a teensy bit, but you have never been this clean in your entire life.

Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort Cabins

PO Box 578, Detroit, OR 97342 (map)

I used to work in one of Portland's busiest restaurants. One day, while desperately scheming to get the weekend off for a trip to Breitenbush, a friend turned to me and said, "You're doing all this just so you can go to a spa?" I calmly explained that Breitenbush is NOT a spa but a magical wonderland. And that's all you really need to know. (Oh, that and ?clothing optional? actually means you'll be the only one wearing a swimsuit).
