You may be thinking that cupcakes were so five years ago. Au contraire, dear friends. Those frosted mini-cakes are more popular now than ever, with a slew of new cupcake shops (and even cupcake trucks!) sprouting up all over the city. We've got the best places for cupcakes in Chicago. It's not unusual to see massive line outside the door, winding all the way down Walton Street, for this L.A.-based bakery that came to Chicago in 2010. High-grade ingredients such as Madagascar vanilla bean make for super-flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth cakes with an irresistible mound of buttery frosting. For a true Sprinkles experience, order up a frosting "shot"--an extra heap of frosting in a shot-sized cup.
Cupcake "curator" Patty Rothman is behind the dessert wheel over at More, where one-of-a-kind flavor combinations are the house specialty. Lemon meringue cupcakes with tart centers and boozy margarita cupcakes with a hint of liquor are all the rage--as are the signature garnishes, including brittle made from bacon and house-made toasted marshmallows (so good, they're now sold on their own).
Signature flavors such as creme brulee and brownie abound at this cutesy cupcake shop, complete with a porch swing inside. The make-your-own-cupcake bar, where you choose your cake flavor, frosting, and toppings (gummi bears, cookie chunks, sprinkles), is a cupcake-lover's dream come true.
