1635 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291 (map)

"Admittedly, I can't say I'm the foremost sushi expert, but I love this place. And judging by the crowds, I think it's safe to say that this place has great sushi. Plus, located right on Abbot Kinney--a plus--it has a great neighborhood feel to it, like everyone in there are regulars. Very welcoming atmosphere."

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended Joan's on Third

8350 W Third St, Los Angeles, CA 90048 (map)

"I love this place because it has a New York feel to it. It's tight, cramped, and busy, which sound like negatives, but something about the experience makes me feel like I'm in a small neighborhood place. Plus, the food is great. And do not leave without having a cupcake. If you do, you might as well not have eaten there."

  3. 3 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Snug Harbor

2323 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90403 (map)

"A great place for breakfast or lunch. They don't serve dinner. If you go, get some yam fries, with whatever you order. If they don't come with your order, then get a basket of them--too good. It's got a nice, neighborhood diner feel."

  4. 4 3.5 Star Rating: Average Father's Office

1018 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403 (map)

"One word: hamburger. Go for the burgers. You will not be sorry. It is almost always packed, which can be annoying, but worth it if you can get a table. And if you do, camp at it and drink after your dinner. Oh, and the fries come in a small grocery cart. How can you say no to that?"

  5. 5 4 Star Rating: Recommended Reel Inn Fresh Fish

18661 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265 (map)

"I have a thing for fish camp-style eating. And here is a great fish camp. You order at the counter, grab a picnic table, and chow down on a mound of food. And a mound it is. The plate is piled high with fish and sides, all clumped together. It's fantastic. A great place for a large group. Plus, you are right on the PCH, so literally across the street from the ocean. If you go, know that you will wait in line, but it moves fast as they make sure you know 'how to order.' It can be intimidating, but so worth it."

  1. 6 4 Star Rating: Recommended Big Daddy's Of Lake Norman

1162 River Hwy, Mooresville, NC 28117 (map)

"I have to recommend a NC fish camp. You must order the salt 'n' pepper catfish, boneless or with bones. You are not eating healthy, but you get contentedly full. It is a no-frills place. The walls are covered with odes to NASCAR. Tucked away on the outskirts of Charlotte--in and around Lake Norman--Big Daddy's is what it is: a fish camp. But, it's a good one, at that."

  2. 7 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Pepper's Pizza

127 E Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (map)

"Smack dab in the heart of Chapel Hill's main strip, Franklin Street, Pepper's is a must when visiting. Again, I'm biased because I went to UNC, but from the eclectic atmosphere to the even more eclectic employees, I don't return to UNC without visiting this place. It's good, ya'll."

  3. 8 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Crook's Corner

610 W Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 (map)

"I grew up in North Carolina, and outside of good NC BBQ, there is nothing better than shrimp 'n' cheese grits. And this is THE PLACE to get them. You may not be a grits fan, but chances are you will be after eating here. Nestled in the heart of the best town in NC, home of the UNC Tarheels, Crook's is a cool, charming place. Again, eat the shrimp 'n' grits!"
