Fro-Yo Frenzy: Frozen Yogurt in Los Angeles

From the archives: April 13, 2008

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the frozen yogurt craze has taken Southern California by storm. Whether it's candy-flavored or tart-and-tangy, it seems as if a new store is popping up every day. With a sweet tooth that just won't quit, I ventured out to find the best fro-yo around, from create-your-own to ... tomato.

It is hard to believe that this yogurt is only 17 calories per ounce, but alas it's true, and I love them for it. I ordered a small (yet not so small) cake batter, chocolate malt and vanilla custard and almost licked the cup clean. Creamy and satisfying, this yogurt is nothing short of delicious ... and healthy. The cozy red and white interior made me feel like I was a kid again, and I am a major fan of the actual plastic golden spoons that accompany the yogurt. Way to practice what you preach. The eccentric name of the store was enough to pique my interest, but after tasting their dozens of flavors, I was hooked. Not only do they cater to the tart-loving crowd with their white cloud flavor (which now also comes in a light version), they also had many of my personal favorites, like white chocolate macadamia and mocha (chocoholic, that's me). They serve generous amounts--always a plus--and I loved how the nutrition facts were posted on the wall. Nothing like knowing you're indulging without really indulging! Swirly Stars: 4 out of 5

After hearing rave reviews about this place, I was eager to try one of their premade yogurt mixtures. After sampling the Girl Scout Samoa--a blend of Samoa cookies, coconut, cookie dough and caramel--I decided on that and the 3 Musketeers (pretty self-explanatory), side-by-side. While both were very tasty and closely resembled their titles, they were also a bit too rich for my liking, and for once I found myself physically unable to finish off my medium-sized portion. I call this frozen yogurt with class. Though I will choose flavored fro-yo over tart any day, I had to give this place a try, and it did not disappoint. While the yogurt on top of a freshly made waffle was beyond temping, I resisted the urge and instead ordered the acaiberry and chocolate side-by-side with some fresh blueberries and mango, and began to see a whole new side of yogurt. Surprisingly, the rich chocolate complemented the sweet yet subtle tart berry flavor quite well. The taste, combined with the friendly staff and bright atmosphere, make this shop worthy of another visit. Swirly Stars: 4 out of 5

As far as fro-yo haunts go, this took the cake for me. It has almost every flavor I could have possibly imagined, and best of all, you do it yourself, from choosing the size to what and how much topping you want. I went to town and got the cheesecake and taro, then ventured out of my comfort zone and added a little bit of the mango tart. To finish, I topped my concoction off with some cheesecake bites and fresh strawberries, and was good to go. For only $.30 an ounce, what more could a yogurt lover want? Swirly Stars: 5 out of 5

I was in love with this one before I even tried the yogurt. The decor is adorable and modern, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. I knew I'd be a fool not to try the blue mango flavor, and all I have to say is wow ... delicious! Being such a fan of pairing my flavors, I got that alongside the plain version, with blueberries and mango, my new favorite fruit combo. I was bummed I only got a small, since I was now in love with the blue mango flavor. I have yet to find another yogurt shop that has this fantastic flavor, so I know I'll be returning here! When I heard that this place had a tomato-flavored yogurt, I knew I had to give it a shot (it's sweet and surprisingly good, so go ahead and be courageous). I also ordered the chocolate and plain next to one another, and added some blueberries and mango, surprise surprise. The chocolate was rich and creamy, and the plain was that usual tart fro-yo 2.0 flavor. What I liked best about this yogurt store is that you add your own toppings and then weigh it. It's only around $.55 an ounce, and while it's certainly no Yogurtland, it?s a nice little gem in a not so fabulous shopping center. Swirly Stars: 3 out of 5

First of all, the name of this place alone is adorable and clever, and while the silver screen legend won't be found getting his fro-yo fix here, tons of other people do. Unfortunately, I got the vanilla mixed with fresh berries, and was disappointed. But I blame myself for not taking advantage of what this place is known for, and that is their candy mix-ins. My sister was smart, ordering vanilla with chocolate chips, brownie and a bit of hot fudge. That, I'll admit, was delicious. The store is great overall, but my choice wasn't. Shame on me. I owe it to this yogurt shop for getting me into the popular tart flavor that everyone has been raving about. I decided to double my pleasure and get the green tea flavor swirled with the original tart and added my new favorite toppings, blueberries and mango. The taste was a bit tangy, yet sweet at the same time, and not overpowering ... always a plus. I prefer the original over the green tea because it has more of a subtle vanilla taste. I just wish there were more than just two flavor options. Swirly Stars: 3.5 out of 5

After hearing so many rave reviews about this one, I was psyched to give it a try. Got the coffee flavor, side by side with original and added my normal fruit toppings. While the coffee was ok, it didn't have much flavor and I was disappointed since I'd heard so much about it. Word to the wise: coffee with fruit is not the best idea, in my opinion. I also thought the prices were too steep for such simple yogurt flavors. I'd much rather have a similar treat at Red Mango. Swirly Stars: 2 out of 5
