Updated: March 26, 2007

The son of American icon Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie has not only kept his family legacy alive for the past 40 years, but he's created a legend of his own. On the Road: Restaurants

  1. 1 Basil Ristorante Italiano

920 Us Highway 1 Ste C, Sebastian, FL 32958 (map)

"It's a great little Italian restaurant. It doesn't look like much, but there's a little Sicilian guy in there and, man, does he do it right! It's great, and cheap."

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended Tana's Restaurant
    Read Reviews

9071 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069 (map)

"I met my wife Jackie right next door, at the Troubador. She was working there for many years, and one night I stole her away and we went to Dan Tana's. We've been married for 37 years and it's still the same waitstaff! That says something about a restaurant--It's not only great, it's home. Places like this just don't exist in this world anymore."

  3. 3 4 Star Rating: Recommended Elizabeth's Restaurant Inc

1264 East St, Pittsfield, MA 01201 (map)

"The best pasta in the Northeast. Again, it doesn't look like much--it's a little house on the side of the old General Electric headquarters--but it's definitely worth a visit. If I'm home, it's where I go. It's one of my favorite places."

On the Road: Hotels

  1. 4 3 Star Rating: Average Sportsmen's Lodge

12833 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, CA 91604 (map)

"It's one of my favorite hotels, and it has pictures of all the old singing cowboys on the walls of the cafe. I would not stay anywhere else in Los Angeles."

  2. 5 Historic Taos Inn

125 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte, Taos, NM 87571 (map)

"We love this place, and we love the Cocina Lodge there. The places where the local folk meet for breakfast are always more than just hotels."

  3. 6 2 Star Rating: Below Average El Rancho Hotel & Motel
    Read Reviews

    1000 E Highway 66, Gallup, NM 87301 (map)

"Exit 22 off of I-40, don't miss it... And don't stay in the new section, stay in the old section. It's the place where all the old cowboy actors, and that era of actors, used to stay, and the entire place is filled with great old photographs. Every room is the name of another old actor, and they all stayed there. The food is great, the people are great, and it's totally bizarre. It's wonderful!"

  4. 7 Gallatin Gateway Inn
    Write a review

76405 Gallatin Rd, Gallatin Gateway, MT 59730 (map)

"I love this place! It was the end of the line for the Chicago-Milwaukee railroad in the days when people would go to Yellowstone Park. The tracks ended up at the back of the inn, which was built by the railroad. There's something about a hotel where you feel as if you want to be in the lobby with other people, as opposed to hotels where they keep you up in your room away from everybody. I love the places where you're invited by the architecture, as well as the people themselves, to sit down and have a drink and meet other people. This place does it for me."

On the Road: Performing

  1. 8 3 Star Rating: Average Carnegie Hall
    Read Reviews

    154 W. 57th, New York, NY 10019 (map)

"I started playing here in 1969, and I've played here on the same weekend every year ever since. It's on the schedule: We own the Saturday after Thanksgiving at Carnegie Hall."

  2. 9 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Guthrie Theater
    Read Reviews

818 S Second St, Minneapolis, MN 55403 (map)

"Yes, it's my family... We've played here a number of times--It's kind of fun to play a place named after a cousin. At one point we were trying to help save it when they were trying to tear it down. It's a great place, and it would have been a shame to lose it."
