Famous Original Ray's Pizza

"It has all the service modes of any other pizza place, but these guys are exquisite artists. If you ask for the three-cheese-with-hamburger, the guys who work there will ask you, 'Why? Why are you making that choice?' I rarely go to any other pizza place in town."

"One of the last great coffee shops in the city, and they really speak Greek! They're Mets fans, but please don't hold that against them. I always get the scrambled eggs for breakfast. The place is so fast that the eggs arrive before you're done ordering them; speed is a virtue in New York."

Temptations Cafe

"I've been taking my kids here for a decade to eat ice cream and old-fashioned sweets. Just follow my son's lead and get three different scoops of ice cream crammed onto one cone with gaudy colored jimmies all over it. I take the kids, but never order anything because I'm watching my weight. These days I'm wearing a foam-rubber tummy for my role in 'Woolf.' Maybe I should have just had a cone."

Richard Rodgers Theatre
Write a review226 W 46th St, New York, NY 10036 (map)
"We first did 'Fool Moon' here in 1993, and it was the perfect house for the show. It has a steep rake in the orchestra; it's just the best mix of architecture. There is such a rich history here, and you can feel it. I saw 'Fences' with James Earl Jones at the Richard Rodgers and I'll never forget it."

Cheap Jack's

"A new location, and I buy a lot of shirts and trousers here. The hats are a bit expensive, but plenty to look at. If you want cheaper, go down the street to the Salvation Army. I say I buy 'vintage' clothing, but that's actually a polite term. Let's be honest--it's 'used' clothing; I have trouble paying full price for clothes or hats."

"In my youth I use to sail model pond yachts on Spreckel's Lake. These days it's all done by remote control, but it's still a lot of fun and a much better investment than a real yacht."

Goat Hill Pizza
Read Reviews300 Connecticut St, San Francisco, CA 94107 (map)
"I lived in this area before there was anything and Goat Hill brought civilization to the neighborhood. It's a true neighborhood place, and I hear that when the Giants lost the playoffs it was filled with people and the mood became funereal."

Roosevelt Tamale Parlor
Read Reviews2817 24th St, San Francisco, CA 94110 (map)
"This has been one of my favorite places since the members of the San Francisco Mime Troop took me here in '74. I always wanted to do a fire-eating gag involving tamales that would end with flames from the backside. It was too wild back in the '70's, but today it seems tame."

Pete's Cafe & Bar

"The food is wonderful and it's open till 2am, which is great when you're doing theater. I only drink on Sunday evening; every other night is warm water with a twist of lemon. The waiter or waitress is never pleased with this order, but I always tip well. Beer is just too hard on my voice. I know what you're thinking: I'm a bore."
