On the Road

  1. 1 3.5 Star Rating: Average Sammy's Roumanian
    Read Reviews

157 Chrystie St, New York, NY 10002 (map)

"Sammy's Steakhouse is like an old Romanian Steakhouse. It's in this fluorescent-lit, low drop ceiling room with some old guy playing polka piano organ, and they bring out bottles of vodka in blocks of ice. The steaks are so big they hang over the plate. That's kind of a hole-in-the-wall place too."

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended Little Tijuana Restaurant
    Read Reviews

    17 E 26th St, Minneapolis, MN 55404 (map)

"It's really weird, because it's this juxtaposition between punk rock and Mexican food. It?s really weird. They've got this punk rock kind of stuff. They have pictures people have drawn all around the walls. They have amazing Mexican food, it's really good."

  3. 3 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Hoops Pub & Pizza
    Read Reviews

516 Main St, Peoria, IL 61602 (map)

"They're open until 5 in the morning. Hoops. The bars close at 4am and when you go there you can't even move. It's pizza. It's probably one of the best Italian or French Dip sandwiches you?ll ever have in your life."

  4. 4 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Avanti's Italian Restaurant
    Read Reviews

1301 W Main St, Peoria, IL 61606 (map)

"Avanti's is a good place. I pretty much used to live off their pizza and salad when I had no money."

  5. 5 3.5 Star Rating: Average Cuba Libre-Dallas
    Read Reviews

2822 N Henderson Ave, Dallas, TX 75206 (map)

"There's this place called Cuba Libre. They have awesome chicken and salsa. The deal on that is, the salsa is served warm, and it?s just awesome. You don?t normally get salsa warm, but it's awesome. Their fried chicken meal with mashed potatoes and gravy is probably one of the best things that you'll ever eat. It's pretty over the top. It's really good."

  6. 6 3 Star Rating: Average Maxwell Street
    Read Reviews

4047 W North Ave, Chicago, IL 60639 (map)

"A great late night place in Chicago is called Maxwell Street. It's a stand in the street that sells bone-in pork chop sandwiches. I've woken up to about 100 different bags of it, after 100 different nights of drinking."

  7. 7 4 Star Rating: Recommended Jack's Grill
    Read Reviews

1743 California St, Redding, CA 96001 (map)

"Absolutely the best steak you'll ever have is at Jack's Grill. It comes on a 4-inch flat grill, and it's just the best steakhouse on the planet. It's a little hole-in-the-wall dive in Redding California. That place will change your damn life. Their salad is chopped lettuce and French-style cut green beans cold. Then there's the dressing. They've got homemade blue cheese, homemade French, homemade Ranch and vinegar and oil. They toss the dressing in the salad. My wife and I always get French and blue cheese mixed. The steaks there are over the top. They?re cooked on such a hot flat grill that it sears it on the outside, so there?s a little kind of crust on it, and it just locks in all of the taste. It?s unbelievable! I sent them a plaque actually, a gold record for Mudvayne?s "Lost and Found," and they hung it on the wall. It's one of my favorite places, and they're some of my favorite people too. That's the main thing I like in Redding."

  8. 8 3.5 Star Rating: Average Campo Verde
    Read Reviews

2918 W Pioneer Pkwy, Arlington, TX 76013 (map)

"Campo Verde is in Arlington. It's this crazy Mexican Restaurant. You walk in, and the entire place is covered in Christmas lights on the inside. If you order the nachos, they come out in the beginning, and they've got one with cheese and one that?s got actual salsa, and they sprinkle some kind of a spice on the chips, and it's just unreal. Their hard shell taco meal is insane. I guess at Christmas time they go nuts. You've got to put sunglasses on to walk in there because literally they cover literally every single thing in the restaurant with Christmas lights, the bar, the ceiling, the walls, the toothpick holders, everything. That was one of (Deceased Pantera guitarist) Dime's favorite places to go. He used to take bands out there for tequila and rattlesnake. In the morning they'd have rattlesnake and tequila. That's a little insight on that."

  9. 9 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Pequod's Pizza
    Read Reviews

2207 N Clybourn Ave, Chicago, IL 60614 (map)

"Pequods is the ultimate Chicago-style pizza. If you've never had it, you've never had Chicago-style pizza. I think that's the template for Chicago-style pizza. It's insane. It's so thick and the cheese, some people say it's burned, but it's not. The cheese just runs over the edge of the pan, and it crystallizes around the edge of the crust. It's amazing. Oh my God, it's insane."
