Shimmy like the boho-chic sophisticate you are, with the chain's elegant swimwear and its tongue-in-cheek retro flavor. Make like a pin-up girl with a halter top and a high-waisted bottom, or sail like a "summering" yacht bunny with tailored, detailed one-pieces. Just wink, and you're set.

If you're less of an idle sunbather and more of a terrorize-the-beach-er, the suits here are perfect for the active water frolicker. Ladies have racing suits by TYR and Nike, and separates by Patagonia and Danskin built for triathletes (or extreme beach bumming). Baggy trunks or skin-tight jammers outfit the sun-sprinting men.

1 Premium Outlet Blvd Ste 598, Wrentham, MA 02093 (map)

Located in the sprawling steal-city that is the Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, this fashion-forward swimwear chain carries a large selection of designer brands, like Miracle Suit, Robin Piccone, Leilani and Ralph Lauren. West Coast, look out.

100 Huntington Ave Ste F-8, Boston, MA 02116 (map)

With its minimalist cuts and bright colors, this prepster palace makes suit shopping a cinch. Seersucker, retro polka-dot and watercolor stripes dress up classic bikinis and bandeau one-pieces, with plenty of options for sarongs and cover-ups. Cheerful shorts emblazoned with patchwork plaid or little critters dress up swimming guys.

100 Cambridgeside Pl Ste E128, Cambridge, MA 02141 (map)

Even if you don't fit the typical demographic--teenyboppers who love the skate and surf lifestyle--the swimsuits here live up to their promise of being cute yet functional enough to survive hanging ten. Ladies have bold bikinis and boardshorts by Rip Curl, Hurley and Billabong; gents have four lengths of boardshorts at their disposal.

  6. 6 Beach Front Property Swimwear

50 Winchester St, Newton, MA 02461 (map)

No, we're not trying to sell you a rickety beachcomber. Newton's Beachfront Property (a local chain) is a huge swimwear emporium with more than 60 collections, covering the bases with mix-and-match separates, cup sizes A to E, contemporary misses, juniors, designer, long torso and mastectomy.

  7. 7 American Apparel

For the inner hipster, minimalist or exhibitionist inside all of us. Everything here is mix and match, so pair that purple skimpy triangle top with a zebra print side-tie bottom if you please. Plunging one-pieces are almost more scandalous than the bikinis. Guys can choose between lined trunks and very snug swim briefs.

  8. 8 Everything But Water

1245 Worcester St Ste 1126, Natick, MA 01760 (map)

We're pretty sure there's no kitchen sink, either. However, this national swimwear chain sells a wide variety of sizes and styles; professional "fit stylists" are available in every store. A healthy selection of designers are sold, including Betsey Johnson, Olivia Miller and Shoshanna. Also inquire about throwing fit parties. Not fits. Parties.

  9. 9 Stil--CLOSED

800 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02199 (map)

This cosmopolitan women's boutique usually has several swimsuit styles in the warmer seasons, but what it lacks in breadth, it makes up for it in depth. You'll never see these numbers on anyone else, from avant-garde cut-out maillots to ruffles-in-all-the-right-places bikinis. Definitely worth a look-see.

Who knew that there's a demand for designer label swim shorts? This eponymous Saint Tropez-based boutique specializes in men's and boy's swim trunks made from spinnaker canvas and printed in bold designs--more than 50 patterns, including bright stripes, sea turtles and Tahitian flowers.
