Hale Pele

Hale Pele

Portland, OR

Like an ancient Tiki carving, it has history too: a recent transformation from the old Thatch Tiki bar to Hale Pale under the watchful eye of Blair Reynolds (known for his line of cocktail syrups). There couldn't have been a better marriage between Hale Pale and Lilkoi, which brought the little bundle of Hawaiian "crack" bread to the menu.

Haters may be hating, but this place has solid Thai. It's not fancy or anything but it's solid. The prices are right, the servers friendly, and the happy hour one of my favorites.

Elegant, trendy neighborhood wine bar with a great selection of wines, not the best staff, but I don't go there to be entertained by them. This is a late night date place.

Hale Pele. Sometimes you just need to hunker down in a tiki lounge (like when you check ticket prices for Hawaii and do the math and realize that's a LOT of Mai Tais), and this one will do, with its comfortingly kitschy decor, strong cocktails, and daily happy hour (5-6pm). They serve Sunday Brunch too--think grilled Hawaiian bread with guava jam, coconut waffles, and kimchi scrambles. … read more

Hale Pele. If you enter Hale Pele at five in the evening to the sounds of thunderstorms and a gentle rain falling off the thatched roof into the small pool displays at the front--you're in luck! It's happy hour. While it's easy for the cocktails (try the Jet Pack and the Boo Loo) to steal the show, their food menu refuses to take a supporting role. The noodles, vegetables, and meat dishes are all island-inspired, creating the complete tiki bar experience.… read more
