We all need to get out of the city sometimes, especially during the hot, muggy days of summer, and what better pretext for an excursion than a good meal? We've put together a list of five restaurants worthy of a day trip, for when you don't have time for a vacation, or even a staycation, but you can manage a daycation: a two-way, there-and-back pleasure trip to enjoy a dining experience that's off the beaten path--but not so far off that you'll need to book a hotel room. . Barbecue brisket is beloved in Dallas and there are plenty of places where you can find it on the menu. Although it's hard to beat this fare favorite, change up your routine with these global twists on traditional `cue. From Korean beef to Brazilian fish ribs, these versions take lipsmacking to a new level.
The sandwich formula is beautifully universal: all matter of tastiness smushed between two supportive, protective slices of carbohydrate. Boston, the international playground that it is, plays host to several colorful sandwich interpretations, from Vietnam's pork-laden banh mi to Chile's spicy avocado and green bean-topped chacarero. `Tis time to wrap your mind (and jaw) around some of the city's global players of bread and filling. Drinking by the pitcher is not only a cost-efficient means of getting hammered, but it allows you the pleasure of sharing a communal spirit amongst friends (while secretly wondering which so-called friend is going to bogart the last glass). Save a few bucks and make a few friends by sharing a pitcher of sangria, caipirinha or margarita at one of these local drinking spots. (Photo: Sangria for two at Sugar Cafe)
There is no shortage of great barbecue joints in South Florida. However, sometimes you want to trade in your Americana badge for something a little more ethnic. From 90s dives to turn-of-the-century hotels, Seattle is reinventing its landmarks to make them shiny and new again in their old frame. No need to abandon the landmarks for shiny new structures; make new friends, but keep the old.
The Miami Heat wants to sign Dwyane Wade to a contract extension this summer, before its marquee player has a chance to bolt by the end of the upcoming NBA season. D-Wade seems to love the Miami lifestyle, though. Forget everything you've ever heard about mezcal (and most especially the worm). Right now, this agave-based aged spirit hits some of the highest notes of sophistication and pleasure in a glass, and there are several discerning Boston bars serving it up in high style. What you need to know: The finest bottles banging around are the unblended single-village mezcals under the Del Maguey label, each produced in old-school form (16th-century, to be exact) by individual family producers in Oaxaca, Mexico. This is a smoky, palpable, belly-warming elixir that rubs shoulders just as easily with cognac as with an exquisite tequila, and we've got five bars that serve it up right. It'd certainly be a dastardly crime to shoot this pleasure down; so take your time with each sultry, south-of-the-border sip.
There's no need to ask your guy friends over for chips and cheap beer. Your crew has plenty of places for a little male bonding in Dallas. Try a few of these joints that are all about testosterone, beer and bromances.
As Americans, we've learned to embrace the diversity that comes with our "melting-pot" identity, especially when it comes to our food. Make one type of ethnic food well and you're just like every mom 'n' pop shop in the Mission; combine two disparate cuisines--Cambodian barbecue and doughnuts, Indian curry and Italian pizza, American omelets and Korean rice plates--and you make it on our definitive list of ideal spots to satisfy the bizarre cravings of your pregnant wife or stoner roommate.
