Terrible descriminative service by Lupe – My good friend and I went to The Village Coffee Shop for lunch yesterday because she had been to this coffee shop several times for for breakfast. She's lived in Beachwood for over 15 years, She said it used to be THE place to go to for breakfast, but it looked pretty empty now. It didn't take us long to realize why this famous eatery's traffic dramatically decreased. We had Lupe as a server, and she was not friendly at all. She kept skipping our booth. Now, both my friend and I are women of color, however, we're very liberal in our way of thinking. We both have interracial families and work in a very ethnically diverse environment. However, we couldn't help but to feel discriminated against since the booths that were to our left and right were occupied by Anglo folks. Could this have been coincidential, we both wondered? but when Lupe approached our table only to deliver the food and when we stopped her with a request as opposed to the adjacent boths that got frequently asked if they needed anything else, we both couldn't help but to feel discriminated against. We were both in misbelief being that Beachwood is considered such a diverse neighborhood. We approached Allison (mgr on duty) about the situation but, Lupe had the adocity of calling my friend a layer and walked away from both of us. Who is this Lupe lady? is she the owner of the joint? Perhaps. I did offer to leave my business card to have the owner contact me about the situation because as a small business owner, I'd want to know about a disturbing situation such as this one, but Allison, the manager refused to take it. I don't know what is going on at the Village Coffee Shop, but I do know that my friend or I will NEVER patronize a place that treats people of color as second class citizens. Has Lupe noticed the color of our new president? It's 2009 for goodness sake... Leave the ignorant frame of mind behind and get with the times!

BEST BREAKFAST IN L.A. – I absolutely love this place! The service is amazing and always very friendly, and in that sense it does not seem like an L.A. restaurant. Not that you can't get great service at some places here, but at the Village Coffee Shop it's like a small town cafe and I feel so comfortable there. It's family. I took my mother there recently who was visiting from Washington State and when they didn't have sourdough bread for her toast they went to the market around the corner to to buy some. She thought that was so great! And so did I!

I always like to get there early on a weekend, say around 8 or 9 before it gets too busy. I live in Santa Monica so it's hard to get there sometimes and I don't get to go as often as I like.

But when I do I generally grab a table by the window and enjoy a great breakfast. The coffee is sooo good! The best in town! Even the eggs seem to taste better there. Simply great breakfast food. And if I sit at the counter, often there is some interesting conversation to be had.

They deserve 5 stars from me, without a doubt. Thank you to everyone there and I hope to see you soon!

Not the best breakfast around, but still worth visiting for the atmosphere. – While I live in beachwood and take great pride in our village, I must admit that the breakfasts that I have enjoyed at the VIllage Coffee Shop have been only average in terms of food; however, I continue to return because of the setting, the friendly staff, the unique clientele and the general feeling of being at my Grandma's house while eating. The cafe is definitey old (more old hollywood than plain old) and while not cutting edge, still very ecclectic and hip in a comfortable and non-fussy manner. Overall, breakfasts are crowded on the weekend, reasonable during the week and portions are always generous...in a nutshell, worth your time if you happen to be in the area and enjoy atmosphere as much, if not more than your cuisine.

Great out of the way breakfast spot... – I visited here on a Tuesday morning around 9am. Not too much happening. I'm sure the crowds are much larger on the weekend. This is a fantastic, out of the way, neighborhood restaurant. Great coffee, service, and an extensive menu. I had the house special with four pancakes, bacon, sausage, or ham, and one egg. My girlfriend had some of the hashbrowns which were fantastic as well. Wash all that down with fresh squeezed orange juice...yummy! Breakfast is served all day as well. When done drive up a few minutes up into the twist and turns towards the famous Hollywood sign. The restaurant is at the foot of the sign and driving up Beachwood you get fantastic views. If you snake your way up the mountain you can get pretty darn close despite all the signs that read "No Sign Access". Great spot for a quiet breakfast in a charming little area of town.
