Get the Love me Tenderloin! – Being a sushi lover and new to WC, I immediately asked around about a great sushi joint. Everyone's response was Sushi Groove. Also being a house music fan, I thought it was too good to be true. This kind of thing only exists in LA or NY or the city. But this place was great! I always look for new and original rolls to try and this place had a completely new menu - stuff I haven't seen anywhere! Granted, there were the staples on there (tempura roll, philly roll, spicy tuna etc.) but there were things on there I hadn't seen ever. The Love Me Tenderloin was amazing. I get two every time I go back. To top that, I heard some pretty decent house music for a suburb. Not sure if it turns into a club or not because I've always been out of there by 10 but would definitely recommend. Cool setting to boot.
Not All That And A Bag Of Sushi – My friends and I were given a recommendation by another friend who wanted to try Sushi Groove out. It was a going away party for my friend and we wanted to make it a special time for her, unfortunately it wasn't. We were greeted by a gentleman who was covering for our waitress while she was on a break and he started out rather knowledgable about the food but we pegged him wrong. When we ordered our food we were told that our quantities would be more that what we received, and that our food would be served "family style" on a large platter but we requested otherwise (they said it wouldn't be a problem). As our food arrived we were disappointed to see that we received much less than what we were quoted, and that it came "family style" exactly how we didn't want it. When these issues were brought up to our waitress she said that the waiter was wrong about the quantities and she'd be glad to take orders for more food. She also added that the food came "family style" and basically that's that. In total I received 4 pieces of sushi to the 14 I was quoted, I truly left very hungry and didn't want to give them anymore satisfaction in making me more food. To add fuel to this already uncontrollable fire, we received the check and a 15% gratuity was added. We only had six people in our group, I thought that the gratuity policy only applied to groups larger than 10 or so. We looked on the menu to see if the gratuity clause was printed but it wasn't. I want to thank Sushi Groove for ruining what was supposed to be a memorable evening for my friend and we won't be coming back.
Something fishy going on here. Great service – I "stumbled" into this sushi restaurant by accident. This beautiful girl named Robanne assumed I had had too many, so she immediately offered me a non-alcoholic drink. I think it was called a lychee, it featured some sort of hawaiian sugar or something. Anyway, I wasn't drunk, even though I stumbled to this joint. but what the heck, I drank two of these and immediately felt relaxed and hungry. So I checked off a bunch of things that I couldn't pronounce and promptly received my food. I ate and ate and ate. I started to feel like something fishy was going on. So I drank another lychee. Then the pencil broke as I was checking off some more items. Robanne immediately offered me another pencil. So once again, I ate and ate some more. My head started swimming with thoughts of tuna and eel and squid and rice. Anyway, I got my bill and was pleasantly surprised. I paid and then went to Dan's and had a beer before catching a flight back to Scottsdale. This is an experience I will never forget. If you are visiting Walnut Creek, I highly recommend you visit. You will not be disappointed with the service or the food. And Robanne is pretty hot, too.
sake bomb – This place is fun. Order some sake...
I don't think it is the BEST suchi in the area, but it certainly is not bad. In fact, it is good. If you sit at the bar, they will invent things for you. I always find this entertainig.
GREAT FOOD, GREAT SERVICE, GREAT ATMOSPHERE – First off, the atmosphere blew me away- did not feel like WC, more like SF/LA. The DJ was spinnin great tunes, the rolls were fab esp the Chef's Special which by far was the most creative piece of sushi I have ever had. The King Kong was a great one too. As for the service, it was wonderful. The server was top notch (she knew her sushi and was able to give us great recommendations) and the female manager was making her rounds all night throughout the restaurant. She came up to our table twice making sure everything was ok and was very attentive. She asked us if we ever tried sake (which we never have) and then bought us a round of the unfiltered sake which was awesome. This by far is WC's most valuable hideaway that I wish not everyone knew about cause once the word gets out which I am sure it will, it will be hard to even step foot in there w/o reservations.
Manager Hospitality – I will have to strongly disagree w/the recent review (9/28). I have been there many times & I have always had great service. (Also, sushi is NOT supposed to be BIG - that is the "American version". When sushi is big, you will gag on it! However, there should be an adequate amount of fish which there always is when I eat there.) The manager is a male from what I know (William?) so if you ever have a problem, ask for the owner or general manager. It sounds like a hostess may have come to the table in that last review & if she was rude, then report her to the manager b/c what she said was rude. William (the mgr) has given me samples of sushi to try out - very generous of him. He is very hospitable & appreciative of his customers' patronage to Sushi Groove. I have brought several friends to experience Sushi Groove-Walnut Creek & they all loved it.
P.S. My boyfriend was so reluctant to try sushi but after trying Sushi Groove, he LOVED IT! It's one of his favorite places. As most regular sushi eaters know - newbie to sushi needs to have a good experience to appreciate sushi. So for my boyfriend to "love sushi" now is remarkable. Sushi Groove made a memorable impression to him.
Atmosphere is the only groovy thing about this place – I went on citysearch to find out whether or not to have a birthday dinner here. Since Sushi Groove recieved great reviews, I decided to check it out. Sadly, it did not meet up to my expectations at all.
Alright hands down, the atmosphere is great. The place is almost empty on weeknights, but is a great place to have dates, not parties.
Drinks are tasty but weak, in our experience at least.
However, I was confused as to what was so "inventive" about their sushi. The pieces were much smaller than regular sushi, and didn't taste unique either. I found the menu to be short and bland, nothing out of the ordinary. I would have taken a trip all the way to Sacramento to eat at Mikuni (not authentic sushi, but deserves to be called creative) if I knew this place didn't understand the definition of "innovation."
The service was also pretty low-end. A member of our party, after recieving her dish, said it was much too spicy and nicely asked if it would be alright to have her roll without chili, as ordered. The waitress acted as though she didnt understand what she meant, and 5 minutes later, another woman (a manager, perhaps?) came by and asked what was wrong with her dish. When my friend explained the situation, the woman rudely rolled her eyes and loudly sighed, "Well so what should I do with it, just throw it out?" I found that extremeley immature and unprofessional. They changed her order, but still left us with a poor impression of the service, especially management.
I am a huge sushi eater and was hoping this would be a new favorite hangout/sushi spot. It actually could have been since the normal sushi was not expensive and the drinks were delicious, but the service ruined the prospect. Needless to say, we won't be going back there anytime soon.
Great ambience – I went to Sushi Groove on a Sunday night. I was impressed with the cleanliness, dim lighting and although it was busy the noise didn't carry which was nice compared to most restaurants. It's the type of place that you can gather with friends or take a date. Our male waiter was very pleasant and had a nice personality. The rolls although small were very good and served on long plates, perfect for sharing. The dessert, we had caramel sorbet and a banana dessert which was very good. I would eat there again and would definitely want to try their specialty rolls. Also, it's casual dress attire which is also really nice. Enjoy!!!
Finally a Cool Sushi Joint in Walnut Creek – Dined here 3x and found the sushi to be fresh & the rolls, large and creative. Love their sake cocktails! Service can be slow but it's always friendly (think they are still working out opening kinks). Definitely a much-needed addition to the Walnut Creek dining scene - there's nothing like this around WC! Very cool and great food.
