Steak was over cooked then was sent back to me almost raw and waitress admitted she was drinking on the job. We've been there before because of the location, but I highly recommend Corp. restaurants like Ruth Chris, The Palm, The Guenther House or even the Olive Garden or The Longhorn Steak House, due to the Corp. quality control in the kitchen. The fired oysters were amazing and the fig salad was amazing as well. But a quik note, if your not in the know with the manager then your gonna get a C- experience. After our C- experience we drove downtown to the Palm and got treated like ROCK STARS! I give the Grey Moss Inn a C- .
a most unpleasant experience – My husband and I had a terribly disappointing and unpleasant experience with the manager when we tried to use our voucher from Living Social. We both have pleasant memories of The Grey Moss Inn from over the years and are sorry to recommend to people with vouchers to request a refund before wasting their time and money. There are so many wonderful places to eat that really deserve your hard earned dollars.
Romantic Fine Dining experience, by warm fire. . . . – The scenic towering oaks, enhance a romantic setting on the patio; deer roam by on the eight acre wildlife sanctuary of GreyMoss as you drink one of the fine vintages chosen from the wine cellar and appetize on the fresh mushrooms in herbs and cabernet sauce. As you sit by the beautiful candlelight, next you are served the famous olive twists. . . Perhaps you have ordered one of their excellent cuts of meat or the fresh and fabulous oysters. . mmm. . . everyone is served the succulent GreyMoss squash. Definetly, a place you have to experience! Enjoy!!
Nice Atmosphere – Thought I’d take my wife out for a nice dinner after a movie during the holidays. I had been to the Inn once before and remember a more attentive staff. We set outside since it was a nice evening, it would have been nicer if any one of the many gas heaters had worked. We had to send my wife’s steak back because it was over cooked and looked like it had been cooked about an hour before we got there. I must add the Sam Adams was very cold.
All in all I would say that the place is very quaint, tucked away in a place setup for a lovely evening but the service leaves a lot to be desired, especially for the prices on the menu. Will check out Outback Steakhouse next time.
Wonderful experience – My suggestion is that if you want a unique experience, great food, excellent service in a historic venue...give Grey Moss Inn a shot. I recently stopped by for a quick light dinner.....I ordered the waiters trio salad for my meal and the sausage appetizer ( an exotic mix of sausages and with a dipping sauce. Others with me ordered similar light fare ...the waiter was terrific, service was great....the meal was excellent and quick. I've visited GMI several times over the last 8 years and rank the food and service as top class and a match for anything in the San Antonio area.
Visit great, food so-so – I took my Mom to Grey Moss for her birthday as she had never been there before. We were sat immediatly and had a great server..he was reserved at first, but opened up and became more informative as the night went on.
I ordered the half chicken which came with the sqaush au gratin and the sour creme potato. The squash was very spicy and between that and the chipotle sauce on my chicken, the plate appeared to be "swimming" in sauce. It tastes very similar to the Sonora Cassarole at 410 Diner, but I will say 410's is much better.(maybe its me but when I hear squash au gratin I think of breadcrumbs and cheese topping, not a hot saucy dish). However, the watermelon and watercress salad my mom had was INCREDIBLE. All in all we had a great evening, but you certainly pay for the ambiance, as I did not find the food to be as good as Biga on the Banks, Crumpets, or the Palm.
GREAT RESTAURANT! – We had dinner on Valentines day, the service was awesome, the food was spectacular! The floor manager was very hospitable! Dont recall his name he had blonde hair. Wine selection is the best I have seen, and I eat out frequently. Its a really nice cozy, historic restaurant. Its worth the price, and the nice hill country drive. I will go again and again..
Most Outstanding Restaurant – I was very surprised to see the previous negative review. Over the last 25 years our family has always enjoyed the fine food and atmosphere at Grey Moss Inn. The memories that so many people have enjoyed and the PR is it's most outstanding quality.
Disastrous Experience Trying to Book a Simple Dinner! – One would think a simple party of a dozen (20 max) or so people and a brief (no more than 15-20 minutes) ceremony would not be a big deal. It's really not that big of a deal to us... and as I stated to my sister earlier today, "Ya know, I don't care if I get married in the hotel parking lot."
Upon speaking with Nell, the owner, she was initially kind and helpful and indicated that, weather permitting, we would be able to hold our ceremony on the patio and remain on the patio for the evening; however, we'd need to book another space within the restaurant in the event of inclement weather.
In asking questions, trying to gauge our budget against our options (as some of the rooms have a minimum headcount which we didn't want to book if we weren't going to have that many guests), she became increasingly irritated with the discussion. Eventually, her story changed, and three times, as my fiance and I both tried to calmly and reasonably clarify things she had said in the conversation earlier, she backtracked on the original commitment, and said that we WOULD be moved to a different area of the restaurant after the ceremony was over.
Nell HUNG UP on us collectively three times, yelled at us, talking with us as if we were eight year olds - and all either of us were trying to do was clarify our understanding. Apparently, Ms. Nell believed that by asking questions, we were challenging her, when in reality, we merely wanted to understand.
At one point, she put words in my mouth, suggesting that "If you don't want to be in the cottage because it is old, then you are not going to like any other space in our establishment." That had absolutely NOTHING to do with it. We like the patio, and wanted to be outside to enjoy a nice Texas spring evening with our families - who are traveling here from Georgia and Indianapolis. No more, no less. It had absolutely NOTHING to do with the interior, which we KNOW is very warm and inviting. It was ENTIRELY about enjoying nice weather ASSUMING the weather cooperated. If it didn't, then FINE, we'd have been happy to move into one of the two spaces.
I find this to be a complete shame for a restauranteur, especially one in TEXAS. Hospitality, and the romantic atmosphere of this place is absolutely RUINED with that type of domineering, won't-let-someone-get-a-word-in-edgewise, personality running the show.
As much as I had my heart set on marrying at the Grey Moss Inn, I'm not sure that I can muster that desire anymore.... One of my guests might drop a piece of food on the ground, and Nell might verbally assault him/her. And my guests are much more important than the Grey Moss Inn.
Not worth the price. – With an exception to its location, there is nothing particularly special about the Grey Moss Inn Restaurant. I attended with a party of 6 at around 7PM on a slow Thursday night. We were celebrating the 50th birthday of two of our lady friends. We started with the restaurant's famous Olive Twists which were absolutely divine. The complementary appetizers were the highlight of the night, as from that point on, the food just got worse, I specifically remember biting into one of the Grey Moss Oysters, a $9 appetizer, and thinking that they tasted absolutely ordinary. One could easily spend a couple bucks at a seafood place for the same quality.
The dinner items are pretty expensive. Expect to spend at least $27-$30 a head, not including beverages. Everyone at the table ordered steak, so I decided to try something different and got an $18 vegetarian plate. To our surprise, the meals didn't come with any soups or salads. Our food arrived about 20 minutes after ordering. No one looked completely satisfied. My friend ordered a $35 steak and had to ask for A1 sauce, as she said it was really bland. My vegetarian plate consisted of roasted vegetables topped with the same exact au gratin stuffing that they use on every side. All of the vegetables tasted the same. Another friend ordered their $50 seafood special. My, was that plate not worth it. I can get better lobster ANYWHERE. It was chewy and overcooked. The slice itself was 5 inches long and on a stick. She looked shocked afterwards. Every plate comes with a half baked potato on the side, with that same au gratin stuffing. I would expect some differentiation and innovation, but it was completely lacking. And, to top everything off, although the server knew we were celebrating two 50th birthdays, he didn't offer any cake. I never expect restaurants to offer such a thing, but with their prices and food, it was the least they could do.
I would not recommend this place. Any mediocre steakhouse could offer the same quality of food for less than half the price. The service was nothing memorable, neither was the atmosphere. Although the location of the Grey Moss Inn Rest. is quite intriguing, it is not worth the drive. It's not even worth trying. I would recommend Crumpets for the same type of menu with better food and prices.
Although we did not complain or send anything back, we all promised each other to blog about it later ;)
