Stay away from this place – The place is nice, I'll give it that and that's about it. I went there and it was dead; we were the only ones there. We received horrible service. The host took a while to seat us which is questionabel because THERE WAS NOONE THERE. The soup tasted like dirt...I'm serious. We had to ask for coffee several times...our waitress had short term memory. When we finished our main course we were not offered the dessert menu. Next time I'll take my business some where else.

Very romantic – Wonderful food with wonderful service! My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's Day and it was so much more than expected. The food was so delicious and cooked with flavors I've never experienced before. It's an exquisite restaurant with a relaxed environment. I've been to other high dollar restaurants where it was so uptight, I was afraid to drop a single crumb or talk too loud. Here, I felt relaxed but was still given royal treatment. My ONLY complaint was the hostess who failed to notice me standing there waiting to get her attention for quite some time and I quote "cancelled our appointment because they only hold reservations for 15 minutes." I'm sorry lady but it was Valentine's Day and we were only 20 minutes late. I can understand there are policies in place but there were plenty of tables open so there was no need for the rudeness. My boyfriend who came a little bit after me because he was parking the car told me she did the same thing to him. Perhaps this can be a message to get a new hostess. Other than her, my overall experience was absolutely wonderful and I will be back again!

The Perfect Date – With the holiday season in full swing my girlfriend and I have not had as many opportunities to spend time dinning out. Having purchased tickets to the show Chicago, I heard great things about the restaurant and thought what a way to start the evening. The service was impeccable, the management was over the top with kindness and went out of their way to make it a perfect date. Seared ahi tuni with a splash of fois gras was delectable, my girlfriends venison chop was perfectly cooked and my lamb melted in my mouth. If you find yourself running around and and need to take a well deserved break, Las Canarias is an oasis from the daily grind.

Beautiful, great customer service, but haunted – I LOVE La Mansion. It is beautiful, the architecture is true to the history of the city and the employees are always helpful. It is on the riverwalk which makes it easy to walk everywhere in downtown. The only problem is it is a little haunted. We were awoken by strange experiences the last time we were there and when we questioned the hotel staff we were told that a little boy haunts the hotel and they have to use holy water and candles to make him go away! I will never stay there again after that took place, but I will really miss La Mansion. Stay there if you are not afraid of the paranormal.

You Get What You Pay For – Usually I reserve that comment for proving that free stuff isn't always best. This, on the other hand, while pricey, IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!! My husband and I had been there several times when we were out-of-towners and now that we are SA residents, we try to bring our out-of-towners there for the Sunday brunch. This staff is the most attentive in the city. The selection on the massive buffet is unbelievable and will please all. If you go, plan on spending a couple of hours and always make reservations. Ask for one of the tables by the windows overlooking the river. Relax to the sounds of the live guitar player and have a few glasses of champagne!

The historic La Mansion del Rio hides a restaurant of unusual standards. – In Short
Floor-to-ceiling windows and a creamy color scheme maintain the glow of Las Canarias' crisp but comfortable two-tiered interior. An outdoor dining area satisfies diners intrigued by the Riverwalk. Entrees feature Chef Scott Cohen's exotic unions such as Texas blue crab stuffed swordfish tempura. Other signature dishes include buffalo carpaccio with herbed quinoa and squash blossom roasted corn huitlacoche soup with creme fraiche. Wash it all down with a handmade margarita.

High End Riverwalk – This was the last meal I had in San Antonio, and was definitely the most worth the big money. I dined at "Biga on the Banks" earlier, and was very disappointed, but this place was not only beautiful, but delicious. I had the lobster salad, the foie gras, and the Amberjack--all of which were wonderful. The cheese was a great end, and the wine list VERY fairly priced and extensive.

Warm, inviting charm. Excellent restaurant. Plesant, efficient staff. – My wife and I recently relocated to San Antonio from NYC and wanted to enjoy our 31st Anniversary by getting to know our new home town better. In selecting a hotel for the occasion we checked out many locations on the Riverwalk when we discovered La Mansion del Rio.

We were instantly drawn to the hotels look, feel, location and the friendliness of the staff. After we made the reservation, the hotels concierge called our home to welcome us to the hotel and to offer her services. I told her of our intention to celebrate our anniversary and asked for help with reservations at the hotel's restaurant, Las Canarias. I also asked her help in arranging to have a bouquet of flowers delivered to the room to surprise my wife upon arrival.

The flowers were in the room on arrival as requested, along with a bottle of champaign and chocolate covered strawberries, compliments of the hotel. The spacious and impeccable room (with the exception of a half-eaten can of almonds hidden well under the bed by a previous guest) had a large spa-tub that we enjoyed before having dinner. The rooms small balcony gave us a nice view of the Riverwalk: the foot and river traffic below and the full moon that slowly arose above, as though on cue. Minor problems with the wireless internet connection (in fact, I found 4 wireless networks in the room) and the cable TV in the room were quickly and efficiently resolved through friendly and cooperative front-desk staff and the technical engineer.

Our dinner was equally exceptional. We highly recommend the crab-stuffed swordfish and the Chilean sea-bass. The margaritas were also delicious!

Despite finding the experience on the high end of local prices, we found the overall value to be very good. We were happy to find that our new home town has places like La Mansion del Rio to welcome guests

Most impressive – I had never heard of this restaurant but was invited by a friend to dine there. The food was delicious and exquisitely presented, the servers were attentive and well-informed about the ingredients and preparation. We were surprised by "extras" like the wonderful assortment of breads with a black olive tapenade and truffles at the end of the meal. I couldn't think of dessert. Forgot my reading glasses, so had to beg companions to read to me and might have made other selections than what I ordered--the calamari and green salad with goat cheese. Delightful! Didn't sample the desserts but they and the cheeses certainly looked appealing.

La disappointment at La Mansion – We were very disappointed in our stay at La Mansion del Rio. The front desk and concierge staff are less than helpful, often misinformed, and in one instantance incredibly rude. The poolside rooms are very noisy. Our "deluxe guestroom" had burned out lightbulbs, a broken thermostat, and very little hot water available in the mornings. This is supposed to be an upscale hotel in a high-end tourist area, but we've had nicer stays at Holiday Inns.
