Lunch specials were not at all special... – I stopped here for lunch today and it was terrible. I got one of the lunch specials, cheese enchiladas with black beans and rice. It came out white rice, pinto beans and corn tortillas with generic school lunch shredded cheese, I guess those were the enchiladas. Everything was way too salty and my stomach was already hurting after two bites. Service was bad, although there were plenty of workers. Just overall miserable experience. Guacamole was ok.

Seldom crowded--there's no mariachi band or piped-in salsa music. The small, homey rooms are informal and cozy, while there's a patio outside with just enough plant life to obscure the passing parade of cars.

The Food
The guacomole is made by hand here, and the resulting chunky green sauce is punctuated with tomatoes and onions. Scooped up with crispy tortilla chips, it's a great way to prepare for the classic Mexican cuisine to come. The pollo Toluca, a grilled chicken breast, came dripping with cheese, bacon and chunks of onion, which seemed to dominate the scant bits of poblano pepper. The carne Azteca is a brothy, rich, concoction of beef tenderloin lovingly stewed with sauteed mushrooms. La Calesa's beans are firm and black, the rice gently seasoned and tossed with a few fresh kernels of corn. It's fluffy, not gummy, and it isn't fried.
