This place gave me a case of the '"explosive runs for 2,5 days". Never again! I called the health dept on them. Food is CREAMATED. Not smoked. They should close before they kill someone.
NOT THE SAME – WAS NOT AS GOOD AS BOB'S THESE GUY'S NICKEL N DIME U TO DEATH BBQ NOT AS GOOD AS BEFORE VERY SMALL SERVING FOR THE PRICE WITHOUT LARRY PLACE WOULD CLOSE NEED TO LOOK FOR A HAPPIER PLACE TO GO VERY UNORGONIZE
Great Smoked Food with Bar-B-Que Sauce – This place isn't for everyone, just people who like good homestyle food. It's self service, so I don't know why anyone would complain about the service, unless they mama neva taught dem no betta. Before you order you can see the food, how it is prepared and judge for yourself what looks good. I like taking friends there when the concensus is for bar-b-que, since I don't like bar-b-que sauce. Everything has plently of flavor without hiding the taste in some overpowering tomato based concoction. Which as Bar-b-que sauce goes, I'd say it's better than most.. You can order a couple of sides to go with you meat(s). I reccomend the cole Slaw and Baked Beans. If you're expecting Bill Miller's, with more cheery faces asking you if everything is alright between each chance you get to take a bite, you're going to be disapointed. but if you want to get a plate of real food cooked right out in the open for all to see, take that plate to the table and dig in, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Worst BBQ – I visited the Smokehouse on one occasion because I was in the neighborhood and several people had said it was the best BBQ in town. Boy, were they wrong!!! This was probably the worst quality BBQ I have ever had! The sausage was very cheap quality (I'm afraid to know what was in it), the brisket was dry and I asked for white meat chicken and I got a leg instead. The place seemed dirty too.
I read the review in Texas Monthly and saw that it made the list of top BBQ joints in the state. Someone at the Smokehouse must have bribed the critics at TM because I don't know what they were thinking. My friends did insist that I try it again. They said maybe I just went on a bad day before. On my second visit, the food was still not any better. Same cheap quality sausage and brisket, and the sides weren't any good either. I will definitely not return to this place again. Save your money and stay away from this joint!
Best Bar B Que? You people are being deprived of good Bar B Que and you don't know it! – I read all the reviews on this restaurant and everything. I investigated different sites for bbq to find the best in San Antonio. All I wanted was a good BBQ meal. Before walking in I stopped a guy and asked him about the food and he said it was great, so now I'm all smiles. The reviews tell you how good the ribs are and how great the brisket is, but I'm here to tell you NOT! I spent $40 on the family deal of 1 lb of sausage(very bad), 1lb of ribs(not good), 1lb of brisket(very dry), 2 sides and 4 drinks. This was the number 1 BBQ place out there? WOW! How scary! It actually made me afraid to try the number 2 place on the riverwalk because it was rated ahead of them. Heck on my way home I was afraid to even look at another BBQ joint and there were plenty. This may be good to them because they haven't had GOOD yet. I do a better job in my backyard. Bar B Que places are much better right here at home. If I want good BBQ, I guess I'll just have to stay in Lake Charles, La.
Good Meat, That's About It – I ventured out to The Smokehouse on a Friday afternoon after trying two previous times (it was closed) and was confused on how to order because it was my first time. I didn't like being barked at "speak up, I can't hear you" when my order was being taken. When after spending $30 on two pounds of meat, sodas, onions, pickles, 7 slices of bread, and two jalapenos I decided to try the deserts. When I started paying for the deserts, a slice each of sweet potato pie and pecan pie a man barked at the cashier "look at the hand...look at the hand" meaning that I was going to pay with my credit card. I had to purchase more than $5 in order to be permitted to pay with my card. So I bought an extra slice of sweet potato pie (which they order from somewhere but do not make in house, pies were average).
I also wound up buying a bottled soda when I could have bought a fountain soda for cents more and had all I could drink. Nobody told me this; in fact, even when I said that this was my first time, no extra care or attention was paid and I felt even that this aroused hostility because the man said "so this is for take out?"
The meat was good. The brisket was lean, and held together ever so slightly and was delicious by itself or between a folded slice of bread with pickles and onions and their bar b que sauce (which isn't thick, but something like Bill Miller's). I don't eat sausage but I took my trusty dinner companion who says it's the best bar b que meal he's ever had.
I didn't try any of the sides and I'm not sure that I would want to, it's hard to order when you feel a wall of (not quite hostility, but a peculiar feeling of impatience even when there is no waiting line). Will I go back? Maybe, but I'm not going to go out of my way. There are plenty of other places where you can get good bar b que, at the same price or better and not be met with discomfiting even humiliating treatment.
The food dosn't taste good – Customer Service was lacking and the food didn't taste very good. This is not a place i would want to bring my family to.
Not very clean – The handling of the food was not sanitary. the tables were also dirty. Plus they had the worst BBQ I'd ever tasted.
Best BBQ Around – I was really sad when Bob, of Bob's BBQ" died. I though that would be the end of good REAL bar-b-que in San Antonio. The new owners (this is the site of the origional Bobs) have continued on with the tradition of great traditional Texas-style BBQ. The Smokehouse is the cornerstone of BBQ on the eastside (in my opinion all of) San Antonio.
Editorial Review – Classic barbecue that's heavy on taste and light on your wallet.
