Art-deco landmark that's left its imprint on Sunset Strip and Hollywood history. – The Scene
Restored from its latest incarnation as The Argyle to its original Sunset Tower moniker, this was once home to stars like Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn and Clark Gable, whose portraits hang on the walls of the gallery. Since it opened in 1929, there have been several demolition attempts, but a $40-million renovation in the late '80s brought back some old-school glamour.
There's a distinct '30s flair in the air, especially at night when the intricate slate-colored exterior is illuminated. A gold-and-black theme runs throughout the lobby, and geometric shapes prevail in most design elements, including the patterns on the frosted glass light fixtures--classic art deco. Of particular interest are the wrought-iron palm trees that line the pool area atop the adjacent former Fenix restaurant space, made almost famous in Robert Altman's "The Player." There are 74 rooms and suites, and amenities include I-Pod stations, flat screen TVs and 300-thread count Egyptian bedding.
Don't forget to visit Chopra Center and spa – Rooms were small, but it is NYC and space is hard to come by. The door men are super helpful. If you go you must visit to the new Chopra Spa! I had a one hour facial and then used their UDI room where you have a private steam room with a separate shower area which includes salt scrubs and an imported red clay body mask. I found out that you can book up to 4 persons party (gonna be an easy Valentine's gift activity to do).
really great hotel – had an amazing stay. love the new lobby really elegant wood paneled walls really sophisticated without being stuffy. room could use a bit of a freshening up but supposedly there are new renopvated rooms (I had an old one). overall fantastic experience. great food great service gorgeous hotel in perfect location.
Charming and Elegant – Although they are remodeling, the lobby and restaurant of this elegant landmark are ready to be enjoyed. They seem to have recaptured that longed-for 1930's feeling with warm and glamorous Art Deco style which includes cozy fireplaces and fresh flowers. Their menu is also a wonderful blend of classic dishes (using mostly organic ingredients) that we found to be expertly done by the chef. Our choices were delicious. The wait staff cannot do enough to make you feel welcome as they are charming and can't stop smiling. Makes you think they love being there as much as you do. Add to all of this the piano player Page Cavanaugh, a legend and a real find, he adds to the atmosphere in a special way. This is a place for lovers of all that is lovely and graceful. Classy crowd. Dress up and have a beautiful evening.
beware – A great art-deco hotel in Hollywood's hey-day that has turned into a modern nightmare. The new owner remodeled the lobby with fake wood panneling and took out the art-deco charm and character. The rooms are disgusting. When I booked the room I was told there was a fitness center and when I arrived it was being remodeled and I had to pay for a gym pass. The acclaimed Fenix restaurant has been closed indefinitely and replaced by a lobby lounge with great service and horrible food. Please do not support this establishment.
Awesome place to party – We had a company party there last night and I had more fun there than I've had in a really long time. The lounge and pool area are elegantly designed with a great view of the city from the pool side. The Argyle is located in a very hip part of West Hollywood, with crowd to match.
Service is top-notch and the rooms have very large, wide windows and are meticulously decorated with a very clean and modern style. The water pressure in the shower is awesome.
