A long time ago – We used to love this place twenty some odd years ago. Now its just awful. I think the food quality has gone down, and maybe my standards has risen. I'm sorry we can't go there anymore.

Fake cheese, but yummy! – I prefer cheddar, but the cheese enchiladas are still tasty. I live out of town, but when I'm in San Marcos I will eat at Herbert's.

The best – My wife and I have been eating at Herbert's for almost 25 years. The thing that keeps us coming back is its consistency. My favorite is the beef enchiladas. They taste the same today as they did the first time I ate them; awesome! We live out of town, but will drive out of our way to eat at Herbert's.

Why go anywere else?? – I live on the same road as herberts, you can almost see it from my house. It is by far the best mexican food I have ever had. I have friends that moved down here to go to texas state, and they fell in love with it also. I dont know why people would not recomend this place. Get the cheese enchaladas(probley spelled wrong) plate. Everyone gets that, it never fails you. It is sort of a hole in the wall, but that even makes it better, I have people from austin ask me if I ever go to herbets, it is also popular in the suronding citys. There are alot of mexican food places in san marcso, sort of a givin, but none compare to herberts. There breakfest is also good too.

Best in The World – I've lived in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Chicago and elsewhere. I've had Mexican food everywhere I've ever been, and I can tell you that without a doubt, Herbert's is the best Tex-Mex in the world, and the best food in the world. I could eat their cheese enchiladas every single day, every single meal, for the rest of my life. I live in Chicago now and would literally sever a toe for some of those delicious greasy cheese enchiladas once a week. One reviewer said they used "fake" cheese, and then plugged Los Cucos. They're an idiot - Los Cucos is terrible compared to Herbert's. I've eaten at both plenty of times. Is the cheese processed? Hell yes - that's why it's so awesome. I don't know what kind of cheese it is, and I don't know how they make their Chili Gravy - but they bake it on the plate, and it comes out hot, fresh, cheap, and delicious every single time. If you go to Texas - get a Herbert's cheese enchilada dinner - if you don't, you have WASTED you ENTIRE TRIP.

Worst Cheese Enchiladas I've ever not eaten – I guess no one around here can tell the difference between real and fake cheese, as every review of this restaurant raves about the cheese enchiladas.

I ordered the cheese enchilada plate and was very dissapointed to find that the cheese on top of the enchilada and inside was fake, as in american cheese (waxy vegetable oil with cheese flavoring). The people I was with had no problem with this, but would you order a pizza covered in american cheese? No, you expect to get real cheese, which is why they started writing it on the side of the box, as fake cheese used to be prevelant.

It was so bad, I had 2 bites (had to give a second chance) and gave it up. I can understand using this type of cheese for queso, but not filled in an enchilada. If you want good real enchiladas go to Los Cuccos, stringy and deliscious/real! I would love to endorse local restaurants but only if they deserve it.

Must eat mexican food – This is one of the best mexican restaurants not just in san marcos but I cant find a place I like better in Austin. And it would be in my top 10 nationally. At least in the hundreds of Mexican restaurants I have been to. Try their cheese enchiladas. They are unbelievable.

Still a favorite – I lived in San Marcos for 4 years, and Herbert's was and still is some of the best food I have ever had. A few years ago, my husband (who is from Dallas) truly didn't believe me when I said that Herbert's was the best. He argued that some big Tex Mex place in that area was the best...that is until I got him to Herbert's after tubing one summer. To this day, we find any excuse we can to go down there and eat...even though he does try to pass it off to some of our friends like it is HIS discovery. You know, I don't care, tho...as long as I get to eat there! Viva Herbert's!!!

I miss this place! – During my time at Texas State this was one of my best memories. When I go back for alumni reunions or just to visit, I make it a point to stop here. The food is excellent, the service is quick, the prices are very reasonable. The cheese enchiladas are outstanding. I can't remember a single bad experience here, and I've been at least 100 times. Yes, it does get crowded. But that just goes to show how good this place is. TexMex perfection! A true San Marcos landmark.

Great TexMex buy Noisy, noisy, noisy – I love the Tex Mex at Herbert's but oh that noise .... not the noise of happy customers, but the noise of wooden chairs scraping on the tile floor and the 19th century serving cart with metal wheels. Combine this with the low ceiling and lack of any sound proofing and it can be deafening. I would love Herbert to get new quiet serving carts and put something on the chair legs.

Former taco stand is a growing Tex-Mex legend. – In Short
Herbert's is a hugely popular off-the-beaten path Tex-Mex restaurant that started as a takeout taco hut. The homemade architecture in the charming authentic restaurant tells the story of how it's grown. Autographed phtoos of celebrity diners ranging from Dallas Cowboys to country singers fill the walls, along with a black velvet portrait of Jesus. Herbert's Special is the most popular combination plate, featuring taco, chalupa, enchilada, rice and beans.

Best Mexican Food Ever – I had the lucky opportunity to attend school in San Marcos. Herbert's Taco Hut is by far the best Mexican Restaurant in the world. When I lived in San Marcos, my friends and I would eat there 3-4 times per week. It is the best place to go when you are very hungry and hung over. I would recommend this place to anyone. You wont' be disappointed with their homestyle food and great prices. Herbert's Taco Hut definitely provides bang for the buck.

WooHoo!!! – Herbert, Herbert, Herbert!!!!

You know what good Tex-Mex is supposed to taste

like. The one thing I like about Herbert's is the food

is the focal point, not the restaurant. Noone cares

if you have the latest haircut or have a suit and your cell phone attached to your ear. You go to eat

listen to some music and come out satisfied. The cheese enchiladas are sublime. The rice and beans and guacamole are all good. They just do right all over. The service is prompt and efficient. Sure its small but its family-oriented. Chuy's you could learn a thing or two hundred from Herbert's but you wont cuz you cant learn to make this type of food, it comes from the heart not the hand. Give it up Chuy and bow down

to your master HERBERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
