We Got Food Poisoning – We've eaten here twice. The first time, we were new to the neighborhood, and thought it would be fun to check out our favorite food: Mexican. So, we ordered on the phone and took some food to go. We were very disappointed. The food was not authentic Mexican, and just didn't taste very good. A year goes by, and we walk by Connie's every day while on walks with our dog. We see a sidewalk sign that advertises shrimp tacos yesterday, and decide to give Connie's one more try. We sit down outside (as we have our dog with us), and are basically ignored for 10 minutes. Finally, we are greeted, and our order is taken. Another 20 minutes passes. No food, no chips/salsa, nothing. (I should note, the place was not crowded, as they only had one other table of guests inside). Eventually, our food arrives. It tastes just OK, but we figured this might be the case considering our first experience here, so we weren't expecting a lot. After eating, we again waited about 10 minutes for the check. Eventually, we figure out that we are expected to go inside to ask for the check and pay. The slow and somewhat unfriendly service and the lackluster food wasn't the worst part. Within several hours, my partner and I were both stricken with severe food poisoning. So sick in fact, that we had to leave in the middle of seeing a movie at the Grand Lake Theater just a few doors down (after getting ill in the theater's bathroom). I called to let the owner know about this incident this morning. Instead of listening to me, she constantly talked over me, telling me that she's been in business for 15 years, has many happy customers and that no one else has called to say they got sick yesterday (hey, they've only been open 2 hours today....maybe she will still get some calls). She then said it was probably US that was the issue.....that our individual stomachs probably just weren't used to the food and that's why we got sick. Really? You're blaming your customer for getting sick? Hey, if one person gets a little upset tummy afterward, then maybe it's them. But if TWO people eat the same dish and get projectile vomiting afterwards, I think it's safe to say it was the food and not the customers fault. Connie eventually offered us a free meal as a sign of good faith, which I appreciated but kindly declined. After that, she asked if we wanted our money refunded. (Um yeah! Why does she have to ask? Shouldn't this be offered?) In the end we didn't take the meal or the refund. I would NEVER go back here for the simple fact of how she handled the phone call. She got defensive, didn't listen, didn't take ownership of the fact that her food made us violently ill, and instead placed the blame elsewhere. NOT the sign of a place I want to patronize in the future.
could not be better !!!!!!!! – I mean c'mon people... this place is great!! the food is always very good. I have had no issues sure when the place is full there is a wait,, If 20 of my friends came over to where I work at the same time they too would hve to wait. Connie's food is very flavorful. I would think that chef Anthony Bourdin would love this food....and connie...
are you kidding? the sauces are the best! – Anyone who says the sauces are bland are crazy. The lines and long waits are because of the great sauces. The patio is awesome! We were thrilled to taste guacamole with lemon juice. You must try the breakfasts. Yes, Connie needs to figure out a better system for getting the food
out faster on those busy days and use the microwave less.
Cute, cheap and tasty! – I moved into the neighborhood and had been eyeing Connie's Cantina, so I logged on here and read a bunch of terrible reviews about it. Well, I had been avoiding it for about six months before curiousity got the best of me and we went anyway. Thankfully! The food was great, the prices were very reasonable and we met Connie! We were plesantly surprised with the small quaint atmosphere. The service was quick and the beers were cold - for me a worthwhile experiment.
Horrible! – If you think about going here, think again- This is beyond the worst Mexican food you would make for yourself at home. I can't belive this place is actually in business.
Slowest Service Ever! – The best thing I can say is that Connie is very very sweet. Other than that, we were not seated at all and they couldn't make up their mind to have us order up front or at the table. We grabbed our own menus, but then were abandoned and ignored. After waiting twenty minutes to place an order, we hadn't even received water, much less chips and salsa to stave off the hunger. The waiters seemed to be lost and the microwave seemed a bit overused (we had a great view of it). We left without ordering and I have no intention of ever attempting to eat there again. However, there were a lot of people there, so maybe they just need to learn how to run their business. As is, they are doing a horrible job.
It's my favorite! – I love Connie's Cantina! It took me forever to find a yummy mexican food restaurant in my neighborhood. Connie always makes me feel right at home with her personal service and warm smile. Her outdoor patio is a must on warm nights. The enchiladas are awesome, the chile rellenos are awesome, the chimichanga is awesome, the tacos are awesome. Beware the burritos! They are giagantic. No really! GIGANTIC. Way too much for even the heartiest appetite.
simply lacking – Connie's Cantina is certainly NOT the best Mexican food in the Bay. I've been there around five times and each time I've hoped for the best only to be disappointed. Connie is a sweetheart. Her food, however, lacks flavor. The guacamole is overpowered by the amount of lime used. The sauces are dull and lukewarm. The last time I went my entree was rewarmed in the microwave before being served. I will never go back due to lack of taste, fresh ingredients and fast food style perparation.
