Please tell me others have experienced some form of racial profiling here???? Because I have, not me personally but my boyfriend. I'm hispanic and my boyfriend is black. This shouldnt be an issue but apparently at Shakespeare's it is. I went somewhat recently with my boyfriend and a group of friends, they all were hispanic. We waited in the horrid line in the back alley and when it came time to go in the bouncer let all of us in except my boyfriend, his reasoning? "Your jeans are too baggy, sorry can't come in". What??! We were all shocked, one of my friends whom was with us told him "what do you mean he can't come in?? my jeans are way baggier!" Which was true. As a matter a fact lots of people's jeans and outfits were considerably baggy but my boyfriend was the only one denied adamently. Mind you his jeans were from GAP and they were bootleg, sounds pretty thuggish huh?? We ended up giving up and I wrote this off for a while refusing to believe that this was what I thought it was, I mean we're in Austin right??? One of the most liberal places... so I thought. BUT I recently read a few reviews dealing with this same exact treatment at none other than Shakespeare's.

Keep in mind that before this incident Shakespeare's was one of my favorite bars on dirty 6th, I never had any problems getting in, that is until I went with my boyfriend. Haven't gone back since. A shame since I used to think the bar was pretty decent.

Racial Profiling Part 2 – I went to this place with 3 of my white friends, I am bi-racial, 3 out of 4 of us were wearing jeans. Now I will be the first to admit I have some jeans that are a little baggy but on this night I was wearing my work jeans which are not baggy at all and on top of that were not any baggier than my friends who were with me. As we walked to the door one of the front door workers coughed to notify the other I was approaching. They let my friends in then told me that my jeans were too baggy and I was not allowed in. This was so blatant every one of my friends with me were surprised and I was just stunned. I have been racially profiled before, but this was more obvious than any other time. I will forever boycott this place and hope you do the same. In a society where everyone is supposed to be treated equal we still have a long way to go. I know that there is still a lot of this out there, but in a mixed college town this was disappointing and hurtful to say the least.

Racial Profiling – A few weeks ago my brother and several of our friends were the victims of racial profiling at Shakespeare's Pub on 6th Street in Austin, Texas. As soon as we approached the door, the two bouncers exchanged glances and words with one another. I knew there would be a problem. We were all very well dressed and quite articulate, and still we were denied entry because one of our friends had on a Versace argyle hoodie under his Armani blazer. We stood by the door to see if the real reason was our friend’s hoodie. You guessed it, it was not, and several other patrons of different races were granted access to the club. The bouncer himself was wearing a hoodie! Needless to say I was outraged!! The bouncers had no real reason to keep us from gaining entry other than their own personal, ignorant, discretion. I love Austin, it is a very eclectic place and 6th street is something everyone should visit at least once, but I can promise you that I will NEVER recommend Shakespeare's Pub to ANYONE. As long as this type of profiling is going on! It hurt me to experience such ignorance on such a personal level. I intend to take this story to every newspaper and radio/ news station that will listen. As long as dress codes are enforced, they should be strictly enforced for EVERYONE and not just African American patrons. P.S. The only reason there is a rating here, is because it is required for me to post this.

Great place to be physically assaulted by the staff. – I came in from Dallas for the weekend and read the reviews of this place and it seemed like something I'd like. When I entered the place, I was a bit surprised that they called themselves a pub but did not have any beers on taps. No problem, I'll just order by the bottle.

At the end of the night, they announced last call and my friend brought me a beer despite me already having a new one. I joked that I would have wouldn't be able to finish the it and that I'd have to take it home while making exaggerated motions of putting the beer in my pocket. Now, I realize that this was probably a stupid joke to make in a bar, and if Shakespeare's had a problem, they should simply ask me to leave.

Instead, the staff at Shakespeare's decided to violently assault me. Their bouncer didn't say one word, he just rushed me at full speed, grabbed my arm so hard I have bruises three days later and repeatedly tried to throw me to the ground even after he had pushed me completely to the other side of 6th street. I am a non violent person and was just trying to get away from this lunatic, I did not provoke in any way or even say anything.

I recommend that you stay away from this bar unless you like being around meth using frat boys on power trips.

Also, if this had happened in Dallas, I would have pressed charges, but it would be too difficult living 200 miles away.

great bar – The bartenders here are great! Every time I go to Shakespeare's it is really busy and the bartenders still manage to serve everyone quite quickly. The music is a gamble depending on the DJ. There is one DJ that is completely horrible (I've had to deal with his questionable taste in music two or three times) but the others are pretty good. It's nice having the option to listen to live music, too. Everyone is always friendly and having a good time. Plus, it's fun to look up all the pictures online!

Fantabulous – This Pub is the place in Austin to become one of the "family", no matter your age, ethnicity, gender, etc. The Bartenders are stupendous, drinks superb. Everyone is somebody here. The crowds are diverse, fun is the game. Everyone dances with everyone,,,, no snobs here. You can sit at the bar or at a table with strangers and become friends quickly. I am most likely the Oldest patron and I have as much if not more fun here than anyone. I am quickly included in groups,, and treated so wonderfully. Young guys buy me drinks,,,, etc. The staff and I are old friends and very close.

I have moved to Ft. Worth and come back every 6 - 8 weeks for the Shakespeare's experience.

This is the best and warmest place on this earth. Go, dance, drink, mix with the crowd,, have a Blast.

Take your soccer-hooligan friends to this Sixth Street hole in the wall. – In Short
European flags hang from the ceiling, leading patrons to believe that international sports are second only to Jagermeister here. Daily drink specials entice a 20-something collegiate crowd, who linger in the anteroom for drinks or heckle pedestrians in the highly coveted space alongside the sidewalk. There are over 50 bottled beers and a handful of popular drafts to sip while enjoying the TVs flanking the bar or the near the pool table in the rear.

Stephans House – This bar has a tendancy to shift between good and very good. If you like a crass bartender who will tell you straight, go early. Stephan is one of the best at tending bar in town. The mood of the bar does shift after around 10 pm. Shakespeare's is one of the best places in town to be a regular. Dont let it's 6th street locale scare you off.

Real. – A great old pub on 6th. It's been there for over 12 years, which makes it old on 6th. A little pocket of 4th street refinement without the attitude smack in the middle of 6th.
