One of the sweetest spots on Sixth Street!! The croissants and cakes are number 1 in my book! Great for coffee dates or just a good read!
Sweetish Hill is specialty cake central, but I would be remiss if I didn't tell you how truly impressive their woven/checkered pie crusts are, shellacked with some kind of gorgeous something -- egg whites, laced with sugar? -- that makes them shiny and sweet. If you want to show off at Thanksgiving, buy one of their pecan pies: It's denser and more nut-filled than most, giving it a high pecan-to-filling ratio.
The woman who owns this bakery has to be one of the rudest people I have ever met. This, on top of the mediocre food means that I will never return. I went with a friend because we had heard good things, and there is a really cool shop two doors down. We planned on stopping in the shop and then heading over to the bakery, but as we passed the bakery the owner came out and started yelling at us about parking. She called my friend a b*tch and asserted that she couldn't read because of the signs saying the parking lot was private. We will not only never go to this bakery, but none of our friends will either. I can't support that sort of behavior, even if the food were amazing, which it isn't.
Excellent custom design birthday cake – We ordered a cake for a relative's 80th birthday party, which turned out to be fantastic. All of the family loved the beautiful design which topped the cake, and were also very impressed by the chocolate cake itself- moist, not overly sweet (which is always a concern with a heavily decorated cake) in short it was a great success . Kudos to the baker/artist. We also had friendly help from Joseph during the ordering process (we sampled a couple of cupcakes while we were there too- yummy!!)
Don't recommend for special-occasion cakes – Cake: I ordered a birthday cake here for its fame in Austin Chronicle Restaurant Poll. The cake was recommended by the staff at Sweetish Hill and was very rich and sweet but doesn't quite live up to its "#2 bakery in Austin" name. None of my guests liked it, which was saddening. The cake was $40 and $16 of it was charged for decoration. I felt pushed into spending the extra $16, but was quite disappointed when I got the cake because the decoration was simple and not artistic. HEB could have done a better job for cheaper. On the other hand, I did receive the cake 3 hours earlier than the original pickup time, so maybe the decoration was rushed.
Parking: There's a few parking spaces behind the bakery but poorly designed. Many drivers ended up going down a narrow, one-way parking isle, got stuck, and couldn't back out easily. So make sure to park in the nearby neighborhood instead. It took me 20 minutes to find a parking spot about 5 blocks away from the bakery at lunch time. The walk back to my car with a heavy cake was not fun.
Overall: It's a cute place and there must be other qualities to this place that got its nomination for best bakery, but in my opinion, not the cake. The cake is good but not great, particularly not good for special occasions. And it's quite a trouble to order and pick up the cake. If you have a party planned and a list of things to do that night, it adds unnecessary stress. So I don't recommend this bakery for special-occasion cakes.
delicious cakes – Sweetish Hill is my go-to place for birthday cakes. They're always just sweet enough without being cloying, and I've never tried one I didn't like. They're also reasonably priced (why go to HEB when you can get a cake for the same price that has icing made out of buttercream, not crisco?) and beautiful. Their cookies are amazing.
Staff didn't Know what a Torte Is – On three seperate visits, I asked about getting tortes. Each time the staff did not know what a torte is, please help your staff. Its hard to believe that you have hired three staff that don't know anything about pasteries. Ok, its Austin.
Fabulous Cupcakes – I absolutely love sweetish hill. They have the best cupcakes. My Favorite are the chocolate with the buttercram white frosting. The cake itself is very moist, and has incredible flavor. The frosting has a kick that keeps me coming back for more. I also love the mini buns. They are soo good. I go to sweetish hill at least once a week to stock up.
Austin's original gourmet French bakery serves up fresh-baked breads, desserts and a mean veggie sandwich. – In Short
This simple yet inviting cafe offers plenty of comfortable tables inside and out. Customers include neighborhood locals of all ages and devotees from all over town. The bakery offers more than a dozen fresh breads, some on selected days only. Pastry connoisseurs can enjoy croissants, muffins and scones. Cherry empanadas overflow with fruit, miniature chocolate eclairs and linzer cookies featuring sweet raspberry jam and powdered-sugar dusting. Other selections include cakes, grilled paninis and salads.
Love this place – If you haven't tryed the Sweetish Hill Bakery you don't know what your missing . Everything here is wonderful you can't go wrong. Get in your car and go immediately and you'll be very glad you did.
An okay bakery – I tried out Sweetish Hill because I love sweets, esp pastries with coffee and because of their great review as a bakery. I guess I expected a lot more from them, but the fruit tart and sticky bun was delicious, but the coffee was too strong and acidic for my taste. Since I liked their desserts, I'd like to try out other items too, but I'd rather drive to Burnet than Downtown for a sweet craving toward the Upper Crust - I LOVE their cinnamon rolls.
